Route 9, as a whole, needs work for traffic control all the way from Kinns road through Malta to Saratoga.
In some parts of the country, they are installing a pre-warning display with a count down, so that as you approach the traffic light, say at Kinns, or in Round Lake, it shows you how many seconds before you will not be able to make the green light.
This allows drivers time to come to a safe stop, rather than having to jam on the brakes, or run the light.
That would fix the problems where there are traffic lights.
As for the circles, most of the time, the traffic is light on Route 9, and the circles are not an issue.
The fact that you go from 55 into the circles, that is an issue. Also, the area you are talking about, it goes from 55 to 30 .
This is not an easy transition.
Although it would make life more difficult, reducing the speed between the circles from 84 lumber through the town, would make this less of a problem.
If it went to 30 MPH just before the circle at 84 lumber, and stayed 30 MPH till you were past the drive-in, that would fix this issue.
I am not sure the town can do this, but more flashing lights would also help. The signage is not enough. The circles are so hard to see, you have no warning.
We need flashing yellow and big signs warning there are traffic circles, like they have at Exit 1 of the Northway to warn trucks to slow down.
This would be a huge help in slowing down traffic.
I hate to disagree there is a lot of traffic at 5pm at the circle by Stewarts on Rt 9 in Malta -- impossible to cross to get over to Price Chopper -- I walk there often and I have taken my life in my hands every time I cross. No one stops for the pedestrian in a cross walk -- you cant other wise you stop in the middle of the circle. I wish there was cross walk buttons like with stop lights this way you cant be in the circle when a pedestrian is crossing.
Yes, Rush hours are bad. This is why circles were put in, because of all the traffic at these key hours.
Traffic lights would have been better, with cross walks, and solid reds on all sides, but this backs up traffic, so it was decided against.
Malta, and Clifton Park, and pretty much all of Saratoga County, except for maybe Saratoga Spings and Waterford, they are not designed for people to be in the streets.
There are no sidewalks. Everything is spread out so that you have to drive to get somewhere.
I know it is a pain to drive, when you are close enough to walk, but really it is the safer coice.
They put in the bike trail, if you are an avid walker, and there are other places where you can walk, but what I see a lot of is people walking from where I live, right near these circles, they are walking to either the liquor store, or beer discount place, or to the gas stations, or to Price Chopper, to get 3 things, beer, smokes, and lottery. When you see all these people walking Route 9, crossing these circles, they almost all have beer and smoke and they are scratching off instant tickets, not paying any attention to traffic.
I think we need some addiction centers in the county to deal with these chronic addictions.
Update: after a recent town meeting there are increased NYSP and Sheriff patrols on this stretch from Round Lake to 67. I've seen them pulling over a lot more speeders in the past few weeks, and they can been seen going up and down route 9 at all hours now. Hopefully this will help.
You still cannot cross the street at the Roudabout at rt 9 and Rt 67 -- it is impossible to go from Stewarts at that corner over to Price Chopper especially at 5pm
I know it is not perfect. There is no perfect solution with the circles, unless they want to put in traffic lights for just the crosswalks. These are the two main highways for the county. Other places have the same problems. Look at Clifton Park. 9 & 146 and 146 at Clifton Country Rd, these intersections have the same issues. Ideally, people should not be walking trying to cross these roads.
Just a thought, and I have moved, so not sure what it is like up there now, but a cross over bridge for pedestrians, or a tunnel under the road for pedestrians, might be something to look into.
With big oversized rigs going through there, with mobile homes, the walk over bridge would need to be really high, but would be safer than an underground tunnel.
If they do put in a tunnel, they need to have CCTV cameras covering the whole thing and linked 24/7 to the SP and Sheriff, so they can respond to problems, which are sure to pop up.
There used to be a lot of walk over bridges in towns all over the Capital District back in the 50's. There were tunnels too, under busy roads. Not sure why they got rid of them. I remember them as a kid. Schenectady had them in several locations, not just for GE, that had both the walk over bridge and the tunnels. Troy also had them, and Albany.
Thats a really good idea -- I saw a little girl about 12 years old trying to cross by Stewarts just the other day I stopped for her but I almost got hit in the process.
I am offended by your comments indicating people only walk to get beer and cigarettes and labeling people who walk are addicts. I walk to Price Chopper and go through the circle on Rt 9 at Stewarts and get milk or other items. I always used to walk that route pre circle. I walk all over the place. Who are you people to tell me what I walk for and where I walk. GEEZE
