Description

The traffic is getting out of hand again in front of the high school on Rock Island. This morning (4-6) I was driving down Rock Island heading downtown and people were speeding through the school zone both ways. A boy was waiting at the crosswalk to get over to the school and nobody was stopping. I came to a stop and the truck behind me whipped into the next lane and sped past. Someone else came to a stop next to me but traffic on the other side wouldn't stop and a semi flew through. The boy was finally able to run across after several cars went through. I start driving again and at the last crosswalk a girl was waiting to cross so we stopped again on my side but the truckers and everyone else kept going by until people finally stopped. A child is going to get hurt or worse if something isn't done in that area. They need crossing guards and if the school can't provide them then the city needs to step up and help our schools. Several of the vehicles speeding through there were semis or construction vehicles. Something needs to be done so these kids have a safe way to cross the street and get to school.
