The repaving on Mentor Ave. was done under the direction of ODOT. Their are three signs identifiying a converging lane. One is located in front of Pizza Hut, the second us just before the bridge and the third which is the symbol for merging traffic is on the bridge. This area is signed and is proper according to the Uniform Traffic Manual. The configurations of this convergence zone does not allow for any other signage and or pavement markers.

Why don't they put diagonal stripes in the left lane to deter drivers to stay in the right lane?

ODOT isn't ALWAYS right....sometimes a little common-sense is in order. More signage or/and additional markings are in order. And then we will STILL have idiots racing to get ahead of everyone. If everyone would quit letting these people in, they might get the message!!!

Okay, so I agree, people are always trying to squeeze in. I came through there yesterday, and traffic was insane. I know it narrows to 1 lane, and because of traffic I had a really hard time getting over to the right hand lane. I ended up taking Jackson Street, to avoid the squeezing. The signage is fine, and I think this happens anytime a lane merges down to 1 lane. People need to relax, and just be cautious. This is NOT a place that you need to be agressive.

And don't forget the folks who just continue to drive in the turning lane all the way down 20. I've seen 2 such examples of people driving all the way past Rider's in the turning lane.

This whole situation is at least better than it was years ago: there were folks driving one lane (+ an awkward half lane) as though it was two all the way into Painesville! This was before they put in the turn lane. I have no idea how there weren't more side-swipes.

There should be a sign on the overhead poles. The ones on the side of the road are impossible to see from the left lane. The signs stating the left lane ends are too close to where the lane actually ends not giving people time to get over in this busy section even if they do see the signs.

If people wouldn't drive 25 in a 35 (ahem, illegal aliens who don't want trouble) people might not be tempted to pass all the slow and dumb up. I have almost been overcome with temptation before.

It worked fine driving as two lanes in each direction.
Roads did not used to be as wide as they are now.
It took basic driving skills to drive safely when it was two lanes.
Drivers have been too distracted for years now. Look at the extra reflective material on stop signs now. Train crossings - it should be common sense that you stop at train tracks. We should not have to have gates at so many crossings.
Drive responsibily folks.

The sign that is above Route 20 East at Fern Drive shows the left lane is straight and needs to be removed. Currently the signs shows left and right lanes are open. Also put a sign prior to rr tracks showing the left land ends and drivers need to merge to the right to proceed East on Route 20. There is a lawsuit waiting to happen when, God forebid gets killed or severly injured. So they can sue the deep pockets of ODOT and contractor that completed the conctruction project who left the road signage incorrect

The traffic on this stretch of Rt. 20 (Mentor Ave.) is ridiculous since the city (in their infinite wisdom) changed the paint to 1 lane in each direction, plus a turning lane. I know that the road was never wide enough (legally) to make it 2 lanes in each direction, but this new solution just does not work! Here's a suggestion that I have seen work in other cities; Make the center lane direction optional. At certain times of the day when the traffic flow is heavier westbound make 2 lanes westbound (with clearly marked digital signs for the center lane), and when traffic flow is heavier eastbound make the center lane eastbound. BTW people are already doing this themselves at the risk of others!
The only other option is tear it all up AGAIN, and make the road wider to accommodate 2 (full) lanes in each direction.
Ultimately, the City of Painesville is planning a major revitalization, but if people can't get from the Painesville Commons Shopping Center to downtown Painesville on Rt. 20, it will all be for naught.
