There is a huge uproar about unsafe warehouse spaces with moves afoot to displace others living in similar places since the horrible fire which took the lives of 36 people at the Ghost Ship Warehouse. Yet the city does nothing about the street encampments which are also dangerous with folks burning trash, using fires to cook and stay warm, even roasting whole pigs on city streets and sidewalks under the highway on Grand and San Pablo. These encampments are hazardous to the health of homeless and non homeless Oakland residents.

This is nothing new. I reported about an encampment on my 23rd Street (a residential street) near MLK. The City is fully aware of these encampments but do not have the political will to do something about it. Sadly, until someone gets hurt and sue, then they might do something. Mean while, we just have to wait until the other shoe drops.

I picked up about 15 used syringes along 29th Street today, along with alcohol prep pads, a bag of white tablets, and other trash, sitting in the "stream" of water flowing along the northern side of 29th Street from 29th/Telegraph westward along 29th St, into the water system grate at 29th/MLK that flows into the Bay. I put it all into a plastic bag I found in the street, then into a trash bin, and reported them to SCF. I also reported it to the City Administrator's office. This is despicable: potentially disease-ridden, used syringes laying in the water flowing into the Bay. It was down the street from the encampments under the freeway along 29th Street. ALSO: that water has been flowing, heavily, like a river, all day for about a month, from that construction site at Telegraph & 29th. Insane waste of water resources.
