Description
The traffic signals downtown are not coordinated. Traffic is constantly backed up from the light on North Main and Park through the intersection of Park and Bank St. Cars coming from Bank Street onto Park have to weave between the cars backed up through the intersection. It is almost impossible to make a right turn onto Park Street from Bank Street because of the blocked intersection. Also, pedestrians have to often walk between cars obecause of the blocked intersection. The walk signal at this intersection only shows the white walk signal for about one second before it starts blinking red. What a mess it has become trying to get around downtown. What is going on?

The traffic signal system was upgraded over this past summer. The purpose of the upgrades was to make the four downtown intersections (Park/N. Main, Park/Bank, Union/Park, and Emory/Pleasant) function better together. As is generally the case when making these types of improvements, several iterations of improvements have to be made over time as the traffic adjusts to the upgraded light timings. These iterations typically make slight modifications which work to continually make the intersections flow more efficiently and effectively.
The City has made several iterations of improvements since the signal upgrades were implemented. Each iteration has helped the traffic flow better through the intersections.
The latest round of improvements was implemented last week. This should work to correct the backup problem mentioned in your posting. We have, and we will continue to, monitor the signals downtown, making slight adjustments where necessary to help facilitate the traffic flow.
