Description
Bellevue Avenue Sidewalks:
We've been discussing the deplorable condition of the deteriorated chip-seal surface of the Bellevue sidewalks for years but nothing has been done. It makes me wonder if the City Council members have ever actually tried to walk on Bellevue. This is the premier tourist area in the City and we encourage walking, yet the walking surface is so difficult and dangerous that many people, including those pushing baby carriages walk in the street. The condition also violates ADA and the City could be sued by an aggrieved elderly or disabled resident or visitor. ADA aside, the City Council should recognize the importance of providing a comfortable and safe walking surface for residents and visitors. The City should make the repair/resurfacing of the Bellevue sidewalks a priority. Whatever is done must be historically appropriate, but maintainable. Some options are brick pavers, a proper redo of the chip-seal possibly with smaller aggregate, or regular bituminous (asphalt) paving with a light color aggregate that will be exposed over time. Stone dust could be added on the surface to 'age' the initial look of the black asphalt. I think we can come up with good options and do some sample areas. But we have to get it into the City budget.

I would encourage them to coordinate with the Bellevue Ochre Point Neighborhood Association (BOPNA) and Save Our Streetscapes (SOS) on possible materials solutions. Plain concrete would not be appropriate.
