Pothole is in the middle of 500 Vernon Street and in front of 584 residence. The cross street is Santa Rosa on the end closest to the pothole and Moss Street on the other end. This pothole has been growing daily and becoming a major impediment to traffic. We placed a stick in it for the purpose of taking the picture to show you how deep it is today.

The City of Oakland Public Works Agency has received this issue. It is registered as service request # 434644. Thank you, in advance, for your patience as we work through a backlog of pothole service requests. Unfortunately the City does not have enough funding to repave all streets in poor condition. With limited funding, our response to resurfacing requests is limited to minor pavement and pothole repairs only. Our Street Maintenance Department will assess your street and determine whether temporary measures might be appropriate. Please understand that this work may be limited to pothole or other minor repairs, and that we have many similar requests. We will do our best to respond in a timely manner. The backlog of streets in Oakland needing pavement currently is $435 million and growing.

According to neighbors this pothole in front of 584 Vernon has been filled in by the City twice and it just keeps redeveloping and sinking further. So it may indeed be the SINKHOLE that has been reported for 585 Vernon.

The city just came by and filled the pot hole!!!! I spoke with the city employee and he says what he did is a band-aid for the problem, but the real problem is that there may be a water (sewer)pipe with a break in it down there. The dirt from around the surrounding area is seeping into the sewer pipe and then when a heavy trucks or a lot of traffic goes over the spot, it eventually caves in. The very nice worker then told me he is going to report it to the city and request that they dig up the whole thing, fix the pipe, and then fill it up and pave it once and for all. Let's hope!

There is no doubt that it is a sinkhole. It is EXTREMELY dangerous and someone is going to get hurt. This should be a top priority.

Thanks for posting this. I live at 585 and am convinced that it is a sinkhole - every few months they add some asphalt, but it constantly gets undermined and develops again. The city water comes down the street, and I suspect that there is a leak in a watermain.

Tonight I saw three cars converge on the pothole from two directions (of course). One car, going slowly, was about to be passed by the second car, when the driver of the second car observed that in 5 seconds s/he would have a header with the ongoing third car. All cars stopped. Catastrophe averted. BUT a very close call, that hole is a disaster-in-progress. Temporary fixes have been tried and have failed. Suck it up, Oakland.

A few blocks away on Mira Vista, a Waste Management truck sunk into a "pothole" so deep he could not get his driver side door open. It was in a pothole that had been patched many times, and it was full of water that ran down to Valle Vista. EBAY MUD came out to investigage and it was an old clay pipe that had leaked for a long time, created a wet and weak patch of road and the weight of a large truck caused it's final demise. The City then installed a new pipe and sealed the hole properly. To this day the fix has not shown any signs of sinking.
