You navigate through the 4 lanes that are now clearly delimited for pedestrians. You know, in between the white lines in the pictures. I use it several times a day -- vast improvement over the previous markings. The waste receptacles (in the picture) were there before all this work was done; they are not in the way (in the picture). If you see them moving I recommend contacting the city exorcist.

You walk around them? Pedestrians have the benefit of being able to easily avoid static obstructions that pose no threat to their safety.

@cantsleep, not all folks using the side walk can simply "walk around" the obstruction. I have several friends who use motorized wheelchairs and would have a pretty hard time getting around that obstacle.

Not to feed the trolls, but are some of you actually in FAVOR of having poles in crosswalks? My motivation in calling this to the attention of the city was the proximity of the Northeastern Association of the Blind at Albany, around the corner on Washington Avenue. There are a number of visually impaired individuals who walk in this vicinity, and it seems, I don't know, ill-advised to have poles on the sidewalk where someone with limited vision (or mobility) might walk (or roll) into them. It's great that these poles are a non-issue for you, but I was thinking of others. And alt, I see that you just use SCF to make comments, so I hope this thread makes your day!

I'm in favor of not spending tax money and causing more traffic/parking issues for an incredibly minor issue.

Also, there's no audible walk/dont walk indication at that crosswalk which I think is a greater inconvienice for the vision impaired.

Should we also remove The Soldiers And Sailors Monument? Its right in the way of the walking path...

Crosswalk design and utility pole placement isn't done willy nilly. There are design and construction guidelines in place to ensure that all people are able to walk safely and efficiently.

In this case the contractor either misread or neglected to read the plans and it was an expensive fix after the concrete was poured.

That being said, it's good to have a report on file, so that if someone does get injured there's evidence that the city was informed.

THANK YOU to the city and the paving contractors! They angled the new white lines slightly, and now they no longer funnel pedestrians into the poles. Well done!
