Is there any way that the City can start using these pictures to reach out to operators/owners of vehicles blocking the bike lane? Let's be proactive, reach out, educate, inform, and make the roads safer, instead of reactively maybe sort of trying to ticket these drivers, if CPD doesn't have anything better to do at the moment.
We know this is a Sysco vehicle, can someone from the City give their driver manager a call and talk about this?
Thank you for reporting. Issues like this should be reported as they occur to the Cambridge Police Department at 617-349-3300 so that units can be dispatched to the location at the time such issues are seen.
Ian - in terms of your request, we regularly speak with delivery companies and also attend meeting with business associations and stress the importance of this safety issue to them . However, it is important to understand that if an address does not have a loading zone nearby and/or the address does not have a driveway available, there may be limited options for some of these drivers.
The whole left lane is dedicated to truck parking, so options ARE available, it is just laziness at the price of others' safety.
Besides, mitigating on safety on public roads because of insufficient parking on a private property does not sound like an acceptable excuse, does it ?
By that same token, should I be able to park my bike blocking the sidewalk if there's no proper bike rack nearby? I mean, that's pretty ridiculous sounding, right? So why would it be ok for a delivery driver to do the same thing? Really, if the City is expecting trucks to park in areas with bike lanes it'd be safer to *remove* the bike lanes.
I fully realize that there will be conflict here and that I'm making a somewhat ridiculous exaggeration, but shouldn't our goals be to protect vulnerable road users first, and business profits second?
Certainly public safety is of the utmost importance and our priority. The statement was meant to provide context for some instances that should only be observed as a last resort when other options are not available.
