Thank you for reporting your concern to City of Cambridge via Commonwealth Connect. We have reviewed the information you provided our staff and will be investigating this issue further.

This issue is now resolved.

I was surprised that the material used for the permanent fix is tar, but presumably that will in turn be replaced whenever the entire length of the street's sidewalks is due for replacing (last done in 1993, I think). The other surprise this morning was the neat line-up of four empty beer bottles next to the repair job. The important thing, though, is that we are very glad to have the new water line and are grateful to the city.
