Hello,
I write to express my concern that in the reconstruction of Kendall Square the pedestrian crossing traffic lights have been removed. This creates a significant hazard to vehicles and pedestrians, particularly at night when drivers are impaired by oncoming auto headlights. The crossing is heavily used since the T stop is there and foot traffic gets very heavy at times. I suggest that traffic lights similar to those at the Mass Ave entrance to MIT be re-installed in Kendall.

The Main Street pedestrian crossing was redesigned as part of a comprehensive design process for the K2-Main Street Department of Public Works project. A raised crosswalk was installed to prioritize pedestrians while curb extensions were included to shorten the crossing distance. The traffic signal was eliminated due to extremely poor compliance. The high number of pedestrians, combined with the low number and low speed of vehicles, led to extremely low pedestrian compliance. Prior to construction, 92% of pedestrians crossed the streets against the green light.
The improvements above will result in a much more logical, understandable and safer pedestrian friendly design.
