My wife and I vehemently disagree with this post. The traffic moves smoothly and efficiently exiting I-285 westbound and turning north on Ashford Dunwoody Rd. Crossing lanes to turn left on to Hammond is not a problem at all and not dangerous in the least. Changing the traffic flow will only cause the I-285W exit ramp to clog up needlessly, vastly impeding smooth and efficient traffic flow, ESPECIALLY OFF THE RAMP TO ASHFORD DUNWOODY NORTHBOUND. Please DO NOT change a thing! We are very happy with the new light timing the way it is!!! Thank you!

This has always been a dangerous merge, but it doesn't seem worsened by the new traffic alignment. At least the coordination of traffic lights are helping. That said, this intersection is a prime candidate for a " jug handle turn". Cars coming off 285 WB to get on Hammond Drive would be looped to right at the top of the exit ramp and merge into Ravinia Drive traffic heading west onto Hammond drive. All traffic on AD road NB wanting to turn left at hammond drive would be funneled to this route, alleviating the left turn lanes altogether on AB Road NB at Hammond Drive. This configuration also benefits traffic SB on AD Road, as there would be more time to get through the light at Hammond Dr since SB traffic will no longer wait for the left turning traffic from NB AD Road to Hammond drive. Crossing the lanes to turn left onto hammond drive after exiting from I-285W is NOT a problem. The flow of traffic off of I-285 is flowing smoothly and efficiently. Please leave as is!

Not sure what time you are exiting I285, but there are five lanes merging together because both I285 traffic and Ashford Dunwoody traffic have green lights at the same time. So the I285 traffic is moving about 35 mph trying to get across 5 lanes of traffic into a left turn lane. At 7:45 AM it is a nightmare. When the light at Hammond turns red, many cars on Ashford Dunwoody are stuck perpendicularly into the Hammond turn lanes. Those who don't make it over to Hammond go up to the next light and u-turn onto southbound Ashford Dunwoody (I almost was hit by a u-turner Saturday coming out of the mall). I believe that if City of Dunwoody or some other agency looks carefully at this situation they will see the problems.

You don't have to, and shouldn't, proceed unless it is safe to do so. However, You, the licensed driver, have the Freedom of Choice. Drivers have more opportunities to take advantage of breaks in traffic and keep traffic flowing off the ramp from I-285W if the exit ramp light is green to turn north on Ashford Dunwoody. If the light is red, then drivers cannot take advantage of breaks in traffic to turn north on to Ashford Dunwoody Rd, and the ramp traffic clogs up. If drivers are blocking traffic perpendicular to the lanes, then that is an individual driver problem that should be policed. It is also indicative of the clogging of traffic off the ramp. Everything possible should be done to keep the I-285W ramp traffic flowing north on to Ashford Dunwoody Rd so that the ramp, and the main interstate, do not clog up. The engineers know this, I believe, and that is why the lights are green. They have done a good job correcting the ramp clogging problem that was created when they put in the no-right-turn-on-red sign on the ramp shortly after the diverging diamond opened.

W Nichols - Agreed, however during rush hour especially in the morning, there are folks who do not use good judgement. I use this exit in the mornings daily, sometime several times a day. I have seen people traveling at 25-40 MPH at the top of the exit, trying to shoot the gap to get to the Hammond Drive turn lane. Implement a jug handle to remove the danger.

This continues to be a problem and needs to be addressed! I have been inches from a side swipe twice now. The traffic coming off I285 westbound going north should have a red light while traffic is flowing north off the bridge. Forcing both to merge lanes in such a short distance is reckless. I noticed they do receive a red light, but at some point in the morning it switches to being green always. They need red lights all day, or at the very least until later in the morning.

Totally agree with Nick. Nothing has changed since I first reported the problem. There will be some bad accidents--it's just a matter of time.
