“The shops at Yale” nomenclature describes only retail tenants in Yale University owned buildings or merchants who have voluntarily joined either the Broadway or Chapel Street Merchants Associations. These shops are in commercial buildings redeveloped by the University as a service to the community to improve portions of downtown, to strengthen the tax base of the City (Yale is one of the largest payers of real estate taxes because of its community redevelopment program) and provide jobs which wouldn’t otherwise exist. Other entities use “at Yale” because they find benefit in doing so and are allowed by Yale to use the name to help their business. In our view, nothing needs fixing!
