Solid waste continues to accumulate in both areas despite Santa Fe County's efforts to try to prevent this from happening. Refuse and effluent from the illigal dumps continue to contaminate the Santa Cruz River and the Acequia Potrero

Santa Fe County has installed a sign on the Snata Cruz Dam Road warning that it is unlawful to dump trash - which has had no appreciable effect as the waste continues to accumulate on both sides of the river.

The decaying remains of a dead horse has been added to one of the illegal dumps on the western side of the Santa Cruz River in the vicinity of 35.981516 / -105.923794

Recent increase in fees for use of Santa Fe County solid waste disposal facilities has resulted in a dramatic rise in the amount of material being illegally dumped.

Signs the County put up with with warnings not to dump refuse in this area have been removed, trash and debris continues to accumulate.

Illegal dumping has increased in this area since county raised the fees for solid waste disposal

It's still piling up - the coyotes spread out what's left of the dead horse, which is now just scattered bones with a bit of dried skin and hair.

Judging by the number of used needles and syringes on the ground this area is being used by drug addicts

The size of this illegal dump varies depending on its use and at the moment it seems to have diminished somewhat, perhaps as a result of some of the garbage and dead animals having been scavenged.

An old mattress, oil cans and bags of household trash appear, along with a large container of old anti-freeze and some construction debris are dumped alongside the river. Spring cleaning perhaps.

Four years have passed since this illegal dump was first reported but apparently nothing can be done about it, in part because Santa Fe County doesn't have the resources needed to deal with all of the illegal dumping that takes place, some of which results from the expense of using County 'Convenience Centers' to depose of solid wastes. The median family income in Chimayó is $35,938 and a Santa Fe County 12 trip/load solid waste permit currently costs $65 - in four years it will be $140. Presumably the amount of trash and hazardous wastes being dumped in public areas will increase as personal incomes continue to decrease and the expense of legal solid waste disposal goes up.

In all my extensive time on SeeClickFix this just HAS to be one of the WEIRDEST and MOST REVOLTING issues I have ever had the misfortune to encounter.

But wait, there's more: judging by the smell someone's added septic tank solids and liquid effluent to the deposit. More refuse now accumulating at a location in the same area, on the western side of the Santa Cruz River in a loop off of the Santa Cruz Dam Road (CR 92), located just past where the county road crosses over the Acequia Potrero and before the community water system's pumping station @ # 48 Santa Cruz Dam Rd. The pile of garbage and debris is located in the vicinity of 35° 58' 56.3088'' N 105° 55' 30.7272'' W

Judging by the latest additions to this dumping ground, a significant number of households in the area are replacing their old Cathode Ray Tube television sets. Unfortunately this method of disposal inevitably includes smashing the glass tubes, which contain 14–23% of lead (Pb) by weight.
