Beyond just shuffling these individuals to a different location in the city, what other organizations are being involved to help these individuals to get into an improved situation?
Sadly the majority of these campers are not unsuitable for housing. They very drug and alcohol dependent or mentally ill or both. The ones we have dealt with refuse help because it means getting put in rehab and having to work. There are about 7000 people in this situation in Oakland and another 7000 in Alameda Co. Over 600K nation wide. This is a complete fail by all of our respective government agencies.
I also talked to a man with social services and he told me when an encampment is cleaned they are offered help, which they refuse because they are drug addicted and don't want to follow rules and refuse medical help. You can't help those who don't want it, but to me there needs to be boundaries about setting up camps. They need tough love instead of being catered too.
