I agree with Peg, the problem is that the crime is larger than law enforcement, They can't be everywhere at the same time. The solution is money, manpower, and fair budgeting.. If this City's administration would allow more funding to the police department, they would have the tools, and people they badly need to combat this issue. I for one would be willing to accept a tax hike, if I knew it wasn't going to get put into a municipal revenue pool, but go straight to the police dept. "police" tax they should call it, and pair it with the service fees for such things as the water services or sewer services.

i tired that b4 i got charged, the courts called it vigilantism and the cops re not much help around here, compared to Saskatoon these cops here are very lazy and a very slow response time, and i dont care about the grammar so dont talk about it lol

Sounds great in theory but...the other night (fri) I was watching 4 teens Maybe 14 - 16 on my street, 12th west. It was around 11pm & the one girl looked so loaded she could hardly walk. yelling & throwing f bombs.Not illegal. I watched them go into 4 different yards & spent a little bit of time in my neighbors coverall garage.Then they were checking cars to see if they were locked.I yelled for them to get the hell away, then phoned the police. I kept an eye on them, they went around & started down the back alley. They appeared to be looking in peoples back yards, & I then noticed them entering one yard. I was going to yell again, but the owner saw them trying to steal their bike! They also yelled at the kids, who ran away, & they called the police! The hoodlums made their way around the block again, & they were about to start up 4th ave West, a police vehicle drove up very slowly, so 2 of the boys turned around quickly & went into the house on the corner. One of them lives there! About 2-3 minutes later, the police drove away, not even checking on the ones that went into the house. A few months prior, I had my car windshield kicked in. You could see the shoe print. A few days later, they caught a kid who was kicking in windshields, they returned him to his home which is on the same street I live. But because he is a young offender, they can't /won't say who he is! That, along with the underage hookers, wanna be pimps whistling for their girls, means we phone the police on just about a daily basis. And the saga just continues.....

Speaking as someone who lives in a high crime area, I'm all for that. Just how, with a cynical [see previous comments] populace and an ineffectual police force, is what I'd like to know?

I tried to start a community watch program, even volunteered to potrol our neighborhood at night with a couple neighbors, but no one was willing to stand behind us or even support it. It was more of a "let us do our job and sit in your house" type of attitude. If something is happening, keep calling the police, eventually they have a record in the computer to do something about it. This is fine for drug houses but for the average sumlord rental property there is nothing. It takes the support of city council to sit down and say "we arnt going to let our city look and act this way" then impliment the proper bylaws and programs to allow this to happen. The city police does a great job with what they have to work with, but they can only be so many places at one time. I believe the RCMP should be helping out the city police on weekends (and "cheque" days) when over 85 percent of the people they arrest for intoxication dont even have a prince albert address.
I pushed to have slumlords held more accountable for the people they rent to, such as what the city of nipawin put in place, but just another thing that was sweaped under the rug in city hall.
We need to stand up at city hall and say "look if your going to visit our beautiful city these are the rules your going to have to follow or dont come here, kindly go somewhere else thanks".
Our downtown looks and acts like a virus has taken over, we need a Purell station at every street corner. Seniors dont feel safe in our community and we cant enjoy the beauty that the city has to offer. But it seems that no one (of political stature) has the balls to stand up and say enough is enough. No wonder we have so many people moving out of city and out of province to work.

Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN 1-866-517-2337) is one option for clearing a neighbourhood, but it only moves it to another one, one usually with a less-than-careful landlord. It doesn't *solve* the problem. HUB can do something only if there are people willing to help. A lot of people are afraid to help the police, and with death threats being uttered, I can't say as I blame them, especially those with children or seniors. Thing is, as has been mentioned, City Hall is going great guns on supporting things only the wealthier citizens can afford and ignoring the smaller things that less affluent people could do with. For example, for the past few years, the Bernice Sayese Centre has had to put a couple of programs on hold because city funding hasn't come through yet. City Hall knows that this needs doing every year. Why don't they have it ready in time? There are other programs that have gone by the wayside for lack of funding at the Friendship Centre, too. Why? So we can have a soccer centre or another golf course?

If there was a simple solution it would have happened already, it is down right impossible to rid a community of crime. It's no ones fault there is crime except the ones who commit it, there will always be shortage of emergency service no matter where it is. As for the RCMP in Prince Albert they are spread thin as is, PA's branch is one of the busiest and they can't keep up as is.

It's simple, you can't push it away, you can either deal with it, or do your research before you move in to said neighborhood.

As for Saskatoon having a better police force, that is completely false, I'd love to see your statistics.

I live on 12th Street West and I can't even count how many times I have seen the cops on this street--lights on the majority of the time. Doesn't keep the hookers from walking this street or the trash who lives in the house on the corner from continuing their illegal activities. On Canada day there were 2 hookers waving at me as I drove down 4th Avenue and 1 standing in the middle of the street waving me down on 12th St west. I yelled at the cracked out hooker to get off this street and she waved me off like she owned it. I called the cops. I'm going to continue calling the cops as that's all I can really do to try and help improve the neighborhood. Hopefully someday I won't feel the need to have the cops on speed dial.

Don't blame the cops, they can pick the hoodluyms up but the crown has to actually get the charges into court without plea barganing them away and then the Judge needs to actually hold them accountable. The cops are as frustrated as the rest of us. Fix the "hug a thug" justice system and you will go a long way towards fixing the crime rate.
