Are you talking about here? How are you suggesting the road be painted? I actually don't see an issue with the sign location. Really, traffic should be merging anyway. I don't think I've ever driven here during rush hour, so maybe I haven't experienced your issue.

Yes, that's it. Since they're looking over their left shoulder they don't see the Yield sign plus the fact that it's too far back from the actual yield point itself. I understand about merging but this is a yield sign so this traffic should slow or stop to allow Mopac to 183 traffic right of way if it's there. It rarely happens. Paint may help but I think moving the Yield sign closer to the yield point or adding another sign there might help too. Thanks for the picture and the response.

I have been the theoretically guilty party on several occasions. There is something seriously wrong with the design of the merge. If you are in a small car, the oncoming traffic is invisible. I try to avoid that ramp altogether. I think the fix is to move the yield lane to the other ramp; because the visibility is much better for some reason.

But that would contradict the general rule that inside lane has the right of way. Another way to improve the situation is for the two ramps to share more flat real-estate, allowing more length to merge. There's really no reason to have a curb between the ramps, thus forcing a merge in a limited space. There's another similar issue with the two ramps you can use to exit southbound Mopac to Steck/Anderson. One is just before you get to the 183 overpass. Take it, and the service road is supposed to yield to you, but the visibility for them is really bad. Visibility for those exiting Mopac is MUCH better. The other one is right after the merge from southbound 183 traffic, but you have to cross a lane to use this option. I understand that when the toll lane gets put in, this will no longer be possible.

I think the general rule is not universal and in this case should be overridden. But increasing the length of the merge and lowering the concrete barrier would help. However, if this is unworkable, the traffic in the left track should slow down and probably should yield.,

It is my experience trying to negotiate this merge in a small car that the person in the inner track thinks I am being a jerk for failing to yield (as the original posting indicates) and I think they are going much too fast for conditions and their presence is completely unexpected. I once had occasion to do this in an SUV and was amazed at how much safer it was.

This is a horrible failure of engineering. It should be noted as such by TXDoT but I have no idea how to communicate with them. Somebody will die there some day.

Somebody has already died there. Maybe not at that exact spot. A motorcycle drove over the outside barrier and landed on northbound Mopac below, several years ago. Last I heard, they did not know the circumstances behind how he managed to execute that maneuver. The first time I took that ramp, I noticed that the radius or arc changes. It starts with a large radius, and then as you're flying over 183, the radius decreases. When I heard about the motorcycle going over the edge, my first thought was that he kept driving along the original curve, hence hit the outside barrier. Normally, a barrier should keep the vehicle retained, though. I don't have an explanation for that part.
