Based on the city council meeting on May 18, The city council agreed to pay $249,980 for what looked like a nice 24 foot by 12 foot refuge island with some room for landscaping in it. That would beautify this busy road.
But now with Beck road having been under construction for over a month and a half, it turns out the contractor is only putting in a small piece of sidewalk with a curb around it, in the middle of Beck road.
First it looks horrible. Second, this provides very little protection, and I do not think if gives any real sense of safety. Third, did city council know that this is really what they were agreeing to purchase with a quarter million of our tax dollars.
This is very wasteful spending. I think the tax payers are getting ripped off.
The attachment is what it was supposed to look like, and in another location they showed measurements of the island at 24' x 12'.

Thank you for your comment regarding the new mid-block on Beck Road. In effort to provide some clarity to the matter at hand the graphic you referenced was used to provide an example of what it (the mid-block crossing) may resemble. In fact, the graphic depicts a design guideline from the City's Non-Motorized Master Plan and is not intended to be a carbon copy of what was built. The City opted not to landscape the island because much of it is taken up by the crossing’s sidewalk, so it is all surfaced with concrete.
Regarding the refuge island’s dimensions, the plan calls for an island that is 28 feet long from nose-to-nose and 12 feet wide (see striping plan attached) and it has been constructed per plan. With respect to the cost of the project over 60% this project’s cost was to repair, mill and overlay nearly 1,000 feet of 2 lanes of asphalt pavement between White Pines and Sunnybrook. The remaining costs were for the crosswalk proper, sidewalks, traffic control, temporary paving and other ancillary items.
Finally a better example of what has been constructed is similar to one in Rochester Hills on Crooks Road for the Clinton River Trail (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Crooks+Rd,+Rochester+Hills,+MI+48309/@42.6500073,-83.1717723,139m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x8824c3ff670ae9d5:0x478eb351f209c453).
