There are no crosswalk lines painted along Snelling between Selby and Marshall. The automobile lane lines are painted, but not the crosswalk lines. This is a MAJOR safety issue.
The photo appears to be the intersection of Snelling & Marshall - not 224 Fairview, as the location states. This project is being done by a private contractor, including all the striping, crosswalks and pavement messages. We are unsure if the contractor has a specific schedule on when they will continue working on the painting of the roads. Our suggestion would be for you to contact that private contractor.
Who administrates this contract? I would like to put this on the city to do something to protect its pedestrians in this case. Advocate for this. Or is me as a private citizen? Do I have to call your contractor? Perhaps the county? Maybe the city should pass the buck. BS. There's a pedestrian plan that the city is discussing. Like a lot of other things the city 'advocates' for, we'll do it if it's not at all inconvenient. I'd just love to see the pedestrian lines get painted before car lines. My rant stems from other noteable occasions where pedestrian infrastructure has come weeks after everything else is said and done. I assure you, pedestrians don't put off their use of new roadway until everything is safely in place for a few weeks. With all the work on Snelling, I hope we can get this straightened out and improve as the summer moves on.
I can understand that they may not be done yet the crosswalks yet since that is different than striping paint for cars. Crosswalks are usually ground out of the blacktop and then have the HV sticker type material applied with heat. But this certain is not the citizens job to check with a private contractor. That's ridiculous?
Dear Public Works Admin 3, do you live in the city and get out of your car and cross streets? I assume you would like to avoid being hit by a car. The crosswalk lines are very helpful indicators letting cars know where to stop.
It should be MANDATORY in your contracts that the crosswalk lines are repainted as soon as the automobile lane lines. I don't care if it is done by a different vendor. For the safety of our citizens, it needs to happen ASAP.
The new Snelling streetscape is supposed to be more pedestrian friendly, and this could not be further from that goal.
I will not stop writing about this until it is completed.
Please say that high visibility crosswalks will be installed here. This is a very busy interesection and pedestrians need all the help we can get to be safe. Thank you.
I can see there is a lot of frustration on this file. Let me first apologize and try to further explain the situation. Snelling Avenue is considered a "Trunk Highway". This means that the City of St. Paul doesn't typically do any work on this street as it is the responsibility of the State of Minnesota.
Because of this, we have no access to information on who the private contractor is, etc because we do not set that up. An employee with the State of Minnesota does all this. We have tried to reach out via email to Eric Rustad, who we believe may have more information on this, as he is a Project Engineer with State of Minnesota for this area. However, we have not heard back from him.
I would urge you to contact him for more information. His office number is: 651-366-4303. His email address is: eric.rustad@state.mn.us
I wish I could help you more on this one, but like I said, we simply have no jurisdiction on Trunk Highways. They are all handled through the State of Minnesota.
