Description

We relocated here to New Haven on May 1st to improve the quality of our lives. I thought more than twice @ renting in an owner occupied bldg., but the price was right etc. We visited the neighborhood - Hill North - several times for noise, commotion whatever as the house is located behind Career High School. We never complained @ the lack of smoke detectors in the apt. that we r still waiting for 3 months later. We never complained about the missing screens in several windows that can't be opened in the summer nor did we complain @ the windows that if they open won't close or can't be reopened. Given the lack of smoke detectors one can see the problem. We didnt complain when we saw there were no door knobs and were advised to just use a knife to open the door --hahahaha yeah, funny. We didnt even complain when the stench of drug use in the basement is so strong it seeps up through the floor.
On the evening of July 5th, at 9:15 p.m. in a text message I asked the landlord to ask his step sons (one of whom doesnt even live here) to turn down the blaring music that is less than 10' from a window. I was told to call the police which I did. At 10:15 the police arrived and told them to shut it off. At @ 11:20 p.m. BRICKS flew through the screens into my bedroom, inches from my head!!! Of course we contacted the police and of course the wonderful Lt. Brendan Kosey and several officers in the ensuing days have responded. Lt. Kosey has spoken to the landlord told him that there were not be an arrest yet and with any luck we are safe...for the time being.
We pay our rent on time, we keep our home clean, we do not disturb others (we dont even own a TV!!!) We had cleaned out the trash in front of the house (no small task). We had trimmed bushes and pulled weeds for hours! We had decorated the front porch with plants (which had to be brought indoors once they were used as ashtrays!!!!) and wind chimes.
This is what happens to good people in this city. This is what happens when an attempt is made to improve living conditions. I have contacted LCI regarding the Housing Code violations of which these are only a few...All together there have been 9 police officers and 2 Police Lts. involved in this nightmare over 2 punks and 2 punk girlfriends, who all together make one complete brain!!!! I will not move. 1 - After having just moved we are tapped out. 2- When a police officer stands in your living room and says, "People shouldn't have to live like this", you make a decision that you will live to the demands of your lease. We have in writing informed the landlord of repairs to be made and according to the Code Violation people we have to wait 72 hours to file a complaint. That will be Thursday. In 2 days there has been no offer to fix screens, install smoke detectors, nothing. Have we texted him? Yes. Has there been a response? No. SO now we let the powers that be play out....I would ask that the garbage be moved away from the windows (we have an infestation of flies) but after the bricks when I asked the music be turned down (not off, DOWN) I am afraid my head will be blown off!!!
