Description

There are no pedestrian signals at Battery and Maple. This is a high volume intersection that needs dedicated pedestrian signals to allow people to safely cross including those that need extra time. This connects to the Burlington Bike Path on one side and should allow for better pedestrian experience. I had three cars cut me off trying to walk across this intersection. Two of them doing right on red.

In addition the one crosswalk leads to a dirt path and not a proper sidewalk. This can be seen in the photo.

This intersection has been a problem for a long time, and a number of people from our office have sent email to the city about it over the years. Another change that would help is a no turn on red sign so that cars coming down maple to turn right on battery have to stop when it is red and let the pedestrians cross.

Update:A new signal here will look similar to Battery & Main. It was unknown how we were going to deal with the SW corner, which is basically a dirt path. The plan now is to do a simple "L" sidewalk with ramps, which lets us properly place the new signals. This is a spring 2016 project.

The job has been bid and the contract is close to approval. Expected start date is spring 2018, and we want to coordinate this with nearby water main street closures so we can do the work simultaneously. Along with pedestrian signals, a symbolic no right turn sign westbound will be lit during the north and east crosswalk phases.

The signal was set to regular cycle at about 12:50 on 10-23-2018, with pedestrian signals and a westbound No Right Turn sign protecting the east and north crosswalks. The Department of Public Works has resolved this request. Thanks for helping to keep Burlington a great place to live and work.
