It appears that all the gutters of the reported streets have been cleaned of the larger aggregate by hand shovel on June 5, 2015. However, smaller pebbles and sand remain. Larger gravel remains on the asphalt portion of the road. Only a sweeper vehicle will complete the job. Is there a schedule to do this procedure?

Obviously there are no quality assurance inspections of work done for service requests. Today I walked Glen Eden Quay and with the many heavy rain events we’ve recently had, the accumulation of sand, small pebbles/gravel and some large gravel remain on the street curbs. A neighbor who witnessed the service request indicated it was city workers who performed the work on June 5, 2015 and not the contractor. This is another example of a service being done by the city when it should be the contractor’s responsibility. Although I inquired about a mechanized street sweeper perhaps performing the final cleaning, it seems to fall on death ears. I can’t tell you how many dissatisfied residents there are, but many still have gravel in their yards which will plague us for years to come

One street that was overlooked for the gravel problem is Bentley Heath Common. This is the street where the contractor staged their equipment.

I understand that contractor and city personnel have done on-site inspections of the streets in this work request and feel that this issue is resolved by reason of normal wear and tear. I strongly disagree with this conclusion because the accumulation of sand, small pebbles/gravel and some large gravel that remain on the street curbs are from the original milling. You would not have embedded gravel in the new asphalt if the curbs were clean. Again I ask, Will there be a sweeper vehicle to complete the job to do it right? You would think that after 89 current views of this issue the viewers would find this comical in that nothing has been done to close out this issue. The sand, small pebbles/gravel and some large gravel will still be there.

Since the end of May, I have reported and tried to get the city to clean up the remaining gravel, sand, and pebbles after the milling and paving of Glen Eden Quay, its sidestreets and cul-de-sacs, and two cul-de-sacs on Upper Hastings. Some photos show the aggregate along the curbs, some in residents yards, and some of the loose gravel that became embedded in the new asphalt.

I have requested several times to have a street sweeper perform a final clean up. Now that the crape mrytle blossums, grass clippings, and other debris are on the streets, a clean up will be more difficult.

I received an e-mail reminder that “my issue has been outstanding for 90 days” and whether I wanted to close out this issue as having been fixed. That will be decided once the city takes appropriate action to our satisfaction. On the “seeclickfix.com” site I found a similar case of loose gravel along the curbs and in resident’s yards after the milling and paving of John Hancock Drive. That issue was reported April 10, 2015. Now that I know another neighborhood is experiencing the same problems there are some questions to ask. Why hasn’t the contractor been held responsible for a thorough and proper clean-up? Who cleans up the gravel in resident’s yards? Is this a standard milling procedure? I thought Middle Plantation was an isolated incident, but I am dismayed that another Virginia Beach community has the same problems.
