This is one of the many intersections designed by our city brains about 10 or 15 years ago that thought if you have a busy intersection put a concrete kidney in the middle of it closing off one or two lanes and that will help congestion. Of course that is the last thing we needed but thats what we got. In the intersection you mention if you want to go straight through you have to wait in line for those who want to turn. If that damn kidney was out of there we could have a left and right turning lane and one to go straight through, but that would increase the flow of traffic on there way to get bottled water. A left hand light would be nice but would it be needed if the street was not half closed off with concrete so traffic could flow and allow time for left hand turns?

Where is there room for this? Just wondering...

That whole intersection is poorly designed ,the sight lines in the east/west turning lanes are blind if there is a vehicle in the other turning lane and north/south has extremely short green lights ,if there are northbound vehicles turning west they move at one per light
I have sat thru 6 light changes behind 8 cars(lots of time to count)most of which did not turn on a signal until they were at the corner.
The corner at 6th ave and Marquis have a similar flaw in the sight line

I mentioned to a councilor about this 5 years or more ago and his answer was , there is not enough traffic turning at that intersection to warrant turning arrows .

What do you mean "room"?

First, to the person who mentions the 'room'. I'm not sure what you mean by that either. Could it be about people wondering if there isn't any room to make the intersection wider, etc?
Of course you can mkae it wider; there IS room. There's that green space and parking lot to the south-west of the waterpark parking lot (basically the corner) you know, there's that really cool boulder. Hey at least it's something to look at while waiting for the traffic to get out of the intersection!

Second, Yeah something really does need to be done here. We all keep talking (complaining) about it, when does this actually get to the people who might do something "concrete" about it?

I think a simple solution to the 'no room' issue is the traffic lights! have it so that say the east bound traffic gets to go first, then a green light for west bound traffic can stay on a minute longer after the east bound traffic gets a red light, and the same thing can go for the north and south bound traffic. There are tons of interesections in Saskatoon and other larger cities that do this and it releaves the congestion of a busy and small intersection.

I agree with the suggestion for a different/improved traffic-light sequence, but I still think that that particular intersection could use widening.

With the new expanation of the Southwood Area I think Cenral Ave is becoming busier and busier. There should definitely be a turning arrow at that intersection. People living in the Bryant Place Apts can almost never get out of their parking lot onto Central because all the cars backed up waiting to turn. Maybe 5 years ago that intersection didn't warrant a turning arrow, but I'm certain the traffic trends have changed since they last looked into it.
