Description
This intersection severely needs a stop sign, flashing crosswalk or stop light! It is directly outside a middle school. Cars are racing down Alderman on a turn, with little foresight. As a resident of the area, no one ever stops at the crosswalk because they don’t have enough of a heads up. They are coming around a turn quickly and run right thru the crosswalk.

Alderman Rd is functionally classified as a major collector road. Major collector roads are not eligible for traffic calming so stop signs cannot be used to control speeding on a major collector road.
Below is a link to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) warrants for the installation of traffic signals. There are nice (9) warrants listed, traffic volumes are the primary warrant used to justify the installation of a signal.

The side street approach volumes of Bentley Dr/Woodridge Pkwy do not meet the minimum warrants for a traffic signal.
This school crosswalk is signed per MUTCD standards with "AHEAD" advanced warning signs. There is ample sight distance to the crosswalk. Both approaches also have pole mounted speed feedback signs alerting approaching motorists of their speed.
January of this year, we reviewed the pedestrian crossing activity at this crosswalk. Outside of the school arrival/dismissal times, pedestrian volumes did not meet the warrants for a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) controlled crosswalk. During school arrival and dismissal times, there is a crossing guard assigned to this crosswalk to control the crossing of the school aged children.
Casey Morse, School Transportation Safety Coordinator, reached out to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office for their opinion on additional traffic control devices at this location. They reported that the crossing guards have never relayed any issues with crossing students here and do not recommend RRFBs as they feel the guards have it under control. If you would like further information on school safety issues, please contact Ms. Morse with your questions at 727-464-8813. For speeding issues on Alderman Rd, please contact the Sheriff’s Office Directed Patrol Unit, at (727) 582-6200. I will assign this issue to the So for enforcement of the posted speed limit.
