Description

"Open burning pollutes the air and poses a forest fire hazard. The air pollution created by open burning can irritate eyes and lungs, obscure visibility, soil nearby surfaces, create annoying odors or pose other nuisance or health threats."
Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy

I have been a resident of the Redford Township since October, 1997, and I understand that if a neighbor would like to burn a small number of leaves or have a bonfire every now and then, this is allowed. I do not like it because I live with asthmatic conditions. Sometimes I find it hard to breathe when the neighbors smoke is bellowing into my yard. It has ruined beautiful weather days for me by driving me indoors plus making my home smell as if it is on fire.

I have complained by calling the police and they have helped me several times. Firetrucks have even been sent out to assist with the fire complaints. The fires are usually distinguished. This did not happen on Saturday, March 16, 2024.

I called the Redford Police Department and complained about an excessive fire burning in the yard of 142377 Seminole, Redford, MI 48239 and was told there is nothing they can do or I can do about it. The owner of this home owns a tree removal business and the fires being built at this location are massive and the amount of smoke generate terrifies me. I cannot breathe when I am in my backyard. The owner is not burning small amount of yard debris or enjoying a small bonfire with friends. The owner is burning massive amounts of tree logs.

What I think of when the owner is doing this is last summer when we were told to stay inside due to air quality from the Canadian fire which brought smoke down to many locations in USA. It is happening here in Redford where a resident is allowed to burn massive amounts of wood and cause the air quality to become so poor it is hard to breathe in your own backyard.

I would also like to mention that police officer who I spoke to on March 16, 2024, said they have received multiple complaints regarding this location, and I can pick where I live but I cannot pick my neighbors. I was dumbstruck. How can this be? I am requesting to have a representative from the Redford Township go and review this property to see what I am explaining here.

We need your help so we can enjoy the beautiful spring, summer and fall days that are coming our way.
