Yes - I've tried the DEC route. Ended up moving out of the vicinity. All new buyers beware though! It is a MAJOR nuisance. The noise is bothersome but the dust is a true health hazard. Pallette and DA Collins contribute heavily to both parties and as such, are enabled to continue to operate in the City limits. There is a whole new neighborhood being built on Grand Ave Ext - they should have the ability to impact change!

It would be interesting to have someone like the Saratogian do their own study and expose the hazards enabled by the City of Saratoga Springs!

I moved to the area 2 years ago not knowing of the noise and extreme dust problem, I am directly downwind of this place, I wake to the noise of gringings and trucks in the morning, breath the dust all year, constently clean it off the exterior. Not to mention the dynomite blasts that happen every few weeks that rock my house!
Yes it is a good neighborhood but buyers are not told of this health hazard when they look here.

The streams and trees nearby are all covered with thick gray dust. it is a major mess to the area resedents, Either the City, DEC or EPA can and should provide CURRENT air monitoring results to the public. OSHA should do the same for the workers on site.

Yes, this has been a problem for many years. Our neighborhood has been affected especially since the mid nineties. Prior to that, it was not so bad. There are years that are worse than others, depending upon how many paving contracts they have.

A group of us met with the Palette management in the late nineties and the early 2000's. We had Mayor Klotz sit in on a few meetings and we once met in City Hall. Palette paid to have environmental engineers test our yards for dust and noise. They found nothing significant. Palette did promise not to use audible back-up devices after dark on their equipment (they use strobe lights at night). They did agree to use water trucks to help control the dust (though the dust spewing out around the facility seems worse lately) and they did attempt to control the noise of their stone grinders. They added chemicals to the black-top operatiuon to reduce the petroleum smell that would infrequently percolate through our neighborhood.

Theoretically, nothing noxious is supposed to impact lands outside quarry property, including dust which is a health hazard. However, DEC was never very helpful which was very disappointing. Since the early 2000's, there don't seem to be as many late night problems with noise, probably due in part to their efforts and in part to fewer big paving contracts. However, I wish that DEC would take another look at the dust.

The plant has been there more years than you probably have. Did you just move to the area? If so, maybe you should have moved elsewhere.

I believe they have been there for 90 years.

I'm glad a private company can sandblast my car on a public road. Why are they not told to address this?

It would be great to see the City get ind take action regarding the noise and more importantly, the dust.

I will repeat, this place has been there for 90 years. They have tried to lessen noise and smells. What do you people want this business to do? Go away? Then where will you get stone to decorate your yards. Where will the pavers be able to get pavement to do your driveways? One person said they just moved there 2 yrs ago, well, not the businesses fault. They were there first. You know I am a lifelong resident of this city. People come to our area to live because of the neighborhood businesses, horse racing, etc., but once here the newcomers try to change what is here when they got here. All the neighborhood stores are pretty much gone. I was told that one family moved near horsebarns on the east side and then complained to city that there should not be horses in their neighborhood. Really?
I think health is hugely important and agree the dust is not a good thing for your well being...then why did you move there? That's all I am asking? You had to see there was a plant there. How could you miss it? They don't try to hide anything.

I confess that I am not a life-long resident. I moved here when I was 3 years old so I have only lived here for 59 years.
No one wants the quarry to close. They provide good jobs and they do have a long history at that location. The City allowed developers to create sub-divisions in areas that are in the immediate vicinity of the quarry. Since then, activities at the quarry have dramatical;ly increased, as have the levels of dust and noise. There is now a conflict due to these competing uses.
The quarry is required to control dust, noise and odors that might otherwise spill into surrounding residential neighborhoods.

LB - are you serious??? Do you think that the realtor really exposed the cement particulate dust and excessive noise to prospective buyers? C'mon....

I repeat, how did you not see what was going on there? They are not a little plant. There are trucks just about all times of the day. Anyway, I do really feel badly for those directly affected. I really do, but you can't keep closing places like this because it is inconvenient. Those homes surrounding (newer developments) haven't been there as long as this plant. It also is not fair to blame the Realtors. It is so obvious to passers by that the Realtors probably didn't feel the need to mention.
I don't know what the answer is for the people surrounding. Maybe move? Sorry that's all I can come up with at the moment.

This plant has been in operation since I was a little kid and I'm 45 now.. I really don't think they are going to close down now because of noise and dust! There is another company right around the corner, Pompa's and they have been there a long time too! If folks don't look into the neighborhood they are moving into that is their own fault!

The Realtor probably didn't feel it necessary. It's hard to miss all the trucks and activity!

Really? REALLY? Thats all i can say. Our economy is so bad right now and all you complainers want a company to shut down putting 40 to 50 people out of work. If they do shut where would we get the black top to fix all the roads listed on this web site to fix? Where would the cocrete come from to build your house or sidewalk to walk your dog. When this quarry opened it was all farm land around. YOU BUILT OR BOUGHT around the quarry. This is not the quarry's fault. Nor is the realitor not telling you about the quarry.

So riddle me this. If the dust and noise are so bad HOW DID YOU NOT SEE IT WHEN YOU BOUGHT THE PROPERTY???? dO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU BUY..

Particulate dust is harmful. This company operates within the City limits. The City has laws. Simply stated, regardless of how long they've been there and how much money they have contributed to the various politicians, they need to abide by the law and tend to the State's health code.
Sounds pretty simple to me my friend!!

The noise is worse than ever! Why are they allowed to run their machinery all night long? Isn't there something the City can do to, at the very least, control the noise? I thought there was a City noise ordinance!!!

Now that spring is here, the noise continues - as a matter of fact, it gets worse and worse - waking our small kids up with the trucks making the beeping noise backing up, accelerating and on and on and on... Crazy that a beautiful City like Saratoga Springs continues to enable this noisy neighbor!

Still no action from the City? And now, there is news that another plant is opening with in the Ballston Spa City limits? Does the County care about the potential long term impact particulate dust can have on it's population??
