I am thankful for our Oakland Public Works being responsive for resolving this littering of our streets. They respond when asked. When there is trash left that has a name and address in discarded trash there is a chance to fine a citizen that has dumped on the street. I have asked the local elementary school to have a Don't Be A Litterbug essay contest. I said I would provide a prize or $100.00 cash to the winner of the contest. The school said "We don't do that". I thought the contest a good idea because that is how I learned by writing an essay in elementary school. I am 67 years old now. As a city how can we instill the "Don't be a Litter Bug" concept. If we have Public Works to pick up the trash, it seems a solution to citizens. Throw your trash on the street and we will pick it up.
Carolyn you might try contacting the Keep Oakland Beautiful board. Please check out there web site. As a Keep Dimond Clean volunteer besides picking up litter it is a good way interact with the public about litter. I am 60 and remember the litter bug campaigns in school. The sad thing I see is that a large number of public works employee's jobs are based on the large scale illegal dumping that is going on. Money not being spent fixing roads and sidewalks. Thank you for all your efforts.
Thanks David!! I too pick up Dimond trash 3 to 4 times a day as I walk through the MacArthur/Fruitvale corners. I'll take comfort that they are clear of litter after I pass.
