Description

This email pertains to the intersection of Honeycut and Falls of Neuse roads, and insufficient/unsafe lane markings for turning to and from the 90 degree turn Honeycut/Falls of Neuse

Recently this intersection was re-engineered so that turning right from Honeycut has 2 lanes, and turning left has one lane only. Turning right on red from Honeycut was eliminated at the same time.

When turning right, there is a left dashed lane boundry on the curb lane. There is no left lane boundry on the leftmost lane turning right.

When at this intersection on Falls of Neuse heading North and turning left onto Honeycut, there are no lane boundry markings for making the turn onto Honeycut.

The issue is that light timings are such that right turns from both lanes of Honeycut, and the left turn lane from northbound Falls of Neuse are initiated at the same time, meaning drivers across the 3 lanes (2 right turning lanes from Honeycut, and 1 left turning lane from Falls of Neuse to Honeycut) need to negotiate this turn at the same time.

Drivers in the leftmost right turning lane from Honeycut have the dashed lane boundry on the right as some guide, along with the physical vehicles in the curb lane as a guide. This is a tight turn, but markings are sufficient.

However, the drivers from Falls of Neuse turning left onto Honeycut have no guiding marks for turning through the intersection. As a result, many turn left too sharply and overly limit the turning space for the leftmost lane turning right off Honeycut, meaning slow speed headon collisions between left front of right turners from Honeycut and left front of left turners from Falls of Neuse are at elevated risk. The middle right turning lane has no room to navigate left or right, and the left turning lane from Falls of Neuse discovers too late that they are turning left too tightly. At minimum this is now a scary turn for the leftmost right turners from Honeycut at busy times.

Solution desired – Provide left side turn lane marking for the left turn from Falls of Neuse onto Honeycut to guide the left turners from Falls of Neuse to a wider left turn than many currently attempt when crossing the intersection.
