Yes, really. These "love locks" on the bridges are part of a misguided romantic fad which has cost thousands in damages to bridges in Paris and is becoming a chaotic and costly nusisance on the Brooklyn Bridge. The locks are messy and potentially damaging, especially to older bridges. They rust and that rust can spread to the bridge railings themselves (which are already in need of some care) and, if too many locks accumulate, the weight of them can cause breakage to the railings. It's better to deal with them by taking a moment to cut them off than let them accumulate and do far more expensive (and possibly permanent) damage to a bridge that is a beautiful and historic centerpiece of the park.
