Yes, it's very hard to see cars coming at the intersection, but this is a shortcut to BART for me, so I often walk it anyway. Would LOVE a crosswalk here.

Yeah, and there are loads of seniors and families with small children around here (who can't cross the street quickly). It is so dangerous!

Years ago, I know that residents collected a bunch signatures for a petition to get a cross walk installed there. I think this was when Jerry Brown was mayor . . . sadly, nothing came of it

In another forum, Casey Farmer, who works for City Council member Lynette Gibson McElhaney, just told me this:

"Please send a detailed memo describing the issues to Wlad, the Director of Oakland's Transportation Services Department at wwlassowsky@oaklandnet.com. From what I have heard from other constituents, due to the number of other requests and the type of expert analysis needed to follow up on each request, this process takes about 2 months."

I just wrote Wlad and I encourage you to do the same. A little bit of pressure should go a long way.

Sonia, I'm trying to determine if this is actually city property. Caltrans owns a lot of property around here and this intersection may actually be under its jurisdiction (i.e., part of Highway 24 / 980). We'll need to figure out who is responsible in order to figure out who to press for corrections.

If you have any ideas about how to figure out who is in charge, it'd be very grateful. I'm starting to dig, but haven't yet got anywhere.

Another accident happened yesterday.

No real response, though when I reported this to the Transportation Commission last month, I received a response from a staffperson named Casey Farmer, who said this issue had been submitted to the cue for the Transportation Services Department to analyze. I don't have a good sense of how long that cue is or whether it has been analyzed. I would hope that the urgency of this issue has been sufficiently highlighted by so many recent sad events on that stretch of road.

The first email in this chain has a phone number to follow up on. That was a serious accident. People drive like they're still on the freeway.

I'm so glad to see that people are getting mobilized to fix this! The intersection is way too dangerous, but the problem can be fixed easily with a stop sign or stop light.

Some of us have also started a website to put pressure on the city to address this. I encourage everyone to visit the site.
