Description
There needs to be crossing flags provided at the crosswalk at 180th and Meridian Ave N. Many people use that crosswalk from the Park and Ride that's at the church there and cross Meridian to catch the bus. There have been many instances between myself and fellow commuters where people won't stop for those in the crosswalk. I think having flags there for us to use to safely cross would go a long way to prevent someone from getting hit in the crosswalk which will happen sometime I'm sure

Traffic Engineer response: Thanks for writing in with your concern about this crosswalk. At this time, the City is not installing crosswalk flags at new locations since it has become a maintenance issue. We are finding that flags are frequently stolen from existing locations, resulting in continuous replacement costs and routine staff time to go restock the crosswalks. This has been a common theme for local jurisdictions like the City of Seattle and the City of Kirkland who allow for volunteers to stock crosswalks rather than providing it as a city service.
We encourage pedestrians to make themselves as visible as possible – using a flashing safety light attached to clothing or a backpack can be an easy and inexpensive way to accomplish this. In addition, the crosswalk flags are also inexpensive for individuals to purchase – a web search for “safety flags” should provide you with some manufacturers and costs.
