The problem is these people don't pay attention to the THREE sets of lane markings that clearly denote which lane to be in to go to Parkade, Stillwater Avenue north, and Bangor Mall.
And when people do realize their mistake, they don't follow the signs, creating havoc with everybody else.

There are two arrows pointing straight for redundancy in case one of the lights goes out. This is why on two-lane roads you will see two lights for each direction, even though there is only one lane for each direction of travel.
I don't know why anyone wants to argue with clear signage. Maybe these are the same people who insist on making a right-hand turn on red even though there are multiple signs and lights prohibiting the turn on red.
Only motorists not paying attention to the lane markers (three sets!) or with no regard for the traffic regulations are going to break the law at this intersection. Removing a standard light isn't going to change these people's behavior, and will only cause major problems if one light remains and it malfunctions.
