Every single car that I pass on Brookfield today swerved into the bike lane to avoid the speed humps. Every. Single. One. Cyclists have no trouble using the speed humps, so why not extend these?

This really needs to be fixed. Thank you for reporting this. My wife and I bike on Brookfield all the time and its terrifying to watch the cars swerving into the parking and bike lane to go around the bumps. This creates a very dangerous situation for all involved. Stanford procedure on all other speed bumps is to put them across the entire lane, and here they should be in the parking lane too because cars are rarely parked there. Then there is the issue that the plan for this stretch of street was a bi-flow protected bike lane on the western side of the street in lieu of parking and that was not followed when these were installed.

Last week there was a police officer in the parking lot of the breakthough magnet school where there is a speed bump almost every car avoided the bumps. Is it illegal to swerve and go around? I would think so but I am not sure of the law. If it is someone was not doing there job very well. Could have made the city quite a few dollars.

These requests must be submitted to your local NRZ (Neighborhood Revitalization Zone) group for consideration. If the NRZ leadership considers the street a viable location for assessment, they must forward the request in writing to the City Engineer, City of Hartford, 50 Jennings Road, Hartford, Connecticut 06120.

Operator, I am the Behind the Rocks / South West NRZ Transportation Chairperson and I believe you've misunderstood the request here. There is already a speedbump at this location. The issue posted here is that the DPW crew who installed this speedbump did it incorrectly. In a very basic way, they didn't finish the speed bump as every other one in the city is done--they need to get back out there and finish it so that it extends through the bike lane AND into the parking lane. There are rarely cars parked here, so it needs to be extended all the way across as you find on other streets. Thank you, Justin Eichenlaub
