The City of Oakland Public Works Department has received this issue. It is registered as service request # 542836. Please check back for status updates or contact us directly at (510) 615-5566.
Since the City installed the pay stations and instituted $2 per hour parking fees, the only cars using this lot have been paying for monthly permits - except on Saturdays when the lot is absolutely jammed. With the pay station continuously inoperable, we're losing thousands of dollars in revenue every Saturday. To make matters worse, since August 1st, the city has been paying a private company to manage the lot. The net result, we're probably losing money.
Since this has been an ongoing problem for at least a full year, I emailed Michael Ford (who is coordinating improvements at all the city's off-street parking lots) and here's his reply:
"The multi-space meters at Lakepark and Walker Ave lots are maintained by Public Works staff and our operator is responsible for reporting equipment problems to them.
I've seen the Public Work's meter repair folks working on this machine myself, so I know that we've attempted to address the issue. I will ask the Revenue Division to provide receipt information for all three machines to see which ones have been "down" more often.
The general problem is that the City's 500+ Cale America multi-space meters are aging and increasingly difficult to maintain. Public Works is acutely aware of the problem and working toward a solution. I'll keep you posted on our progress!"
