Per the truck route map, Fernside Boulevard is not a truck route, but that does not mean that commercial trucks are prohibited along Fernside Boulevard. The reasons are elaborate below.

The Alameda Municipal Code (AMC) Section 8-24.1 states, “…When any such truck route or routes are established and designated by appropriate signs, the operator of any vehicle mentioned in this subsection shall drive on such route or routes and no other except when it is impractical to do so or when necessary to traverse another street or streets to a destination for the purpose of loading or unloading, but then only by such deviation from the nearest freight route as reasonably necessary.”

Vehicles traveling from the High Street Bridge sometimes come from Interstate 880, which includes truck vehicles. Thus, trucks use Fernside Boulevard to get around Alameda. Fernside Boulevard has a neighborhood business district at High Street. High Street also has neighborhood business districts along the corridor at Santa Clara Avenue and at Encinal Avenue.** In order for trucks to arrive to these destinations, they must travel off of the designated truck routes shown on the map and use streets where the vehicles can fit.

You might notice how narrow High Street can be compared to Fernside Boulevard. So if trucks are coming from I-880 and travel to the island using the High Street Bridge, High Street is too narrow to accommodate commercial trucks and their turning movements compared to Fernside Boulevard. Thus, that’s most likely why these trucks are traveling along Fernside Boulevard instead.

FYI, some neighboring cities incorporate “prohibited streets” for their truck routes. As far as I know, the City of Alameda has not identified “prohibited streets” for our truck route map. We’re working on updating the truck route map starting sometime late this year, and I’ll incorporate “prohibited streets” for when we upgrade the map.

I appreciate your response. I understand and agree some trucks are going to have to use Fernside Blvd to get to the business locations you mentioned. However, the majority of trucks using Fernside Blvd, I would say over 90%, are not going to those locations. In the last half hour I have witnessed 2 busses, Gilead and one of the gray (I think google) commuter busses as well as a Safeway truck drive by.
