How is this compliant with the regulations as it is not in a square or rectangular shape? When the regulations were written it was stated not to have any roof top shape of combined panels other than square or rectangular. This does not make a square or rectangle on top of the roof.
Thanks for your comment. Roof top panels shall be configured in a square or rectangular pattern. A pattern is a repeated form or design. The panels on the roof in question are in two large squares on one roof side. The other roof side has panels arranged directly adjacent to each other in rows of rectangles. One row has one panel less than the other two rows due to structural interference.
A statement such as "roof top panels shall be configured in the shape of a single square or rectangle" would require strict adherence to a single shape. The existing regulations have been applied in a way that prevents residents from creating artistic designs (i.e. radiating stars, spirals, etc) or installing panels with large gaps between independent panels but allows for maximum roof coverage while maintaining square or rectangular patterns and attending to safe access and allowances for existing roof structures.
I will put this inquiry into my October report to PZC to allow for discussion if necessary.
Discussion was had at this past week's PZC meeting. From 9/17/14 forward, the application of the regulation will require solar panels to be installed in uniform rectangular or square shapes. All permits already approved are fully valid.
