I suppose an animal expert will know based on the tooth marks. Squirrels have strong teeth I suppose, but the hole is larger than a squirrel would strictly need.
The animal would have needed to be able to jump up the inside to get out, since we only had one shopping bag of trash in the bottom at the time. Looking on the internet it seems either squirrels or rats would be capable of jumping that high.
