I agree totally. This merge is dangerous and traffic is often backed up in the driving lane as drivers in the right lane speed up and try to maneuver their way in (either politely or not) as their lane ends. However, millions of dollars were spent on this "improvement" of Hoosick Street and nothing is likely to change.

What should really happen is that they should have two lanes all the way out to the Stewarts Shop at the intersection of Hoosick Road and Route 142. This would alleviate a lot of the back up all the way down Hoosick St. They should also have two lanes going West from Rt 142 to the bridge. This would alleviate the morning back up going down Hoosick in the morning. If they need more room, why don't they eliminate sidewalks on one side of the road or the other. Hardly anyone walks on them any way. Keep the sidewalks on the side of the road Price Chopper is on and eliminate the ones on the other side.

Everyone probably agrees with the fact that the entire strecth should have been 2 lanes. But, for whatever reason, they chose to go with only one lane in those areas.

Since everywhere there is 2 lanes, they always funnel into one lane (in front of S.Lake & in front of walmart) it might be faster to just have a single lane up and down hoosick street with a middle turning lane.

The bottle necks are the cause of all the stop and go traffic on hoosick. Itf there wasonly one travel lane, there couldn't be a bottle neck right?

2 lanes in some areas and one lane in others is absolutely insane. Who designed and who approved that whole hoosick street corridor anyway?!

Agree with this; the intersection at hoosick and s. lake ave is treacherous.

I agree with the above statement; something truly needs to done about this as when you are waiting in the left lane especially if there is a lot of traffic. You will get other cars trying to pass you from the right lane; they used to have the police sitting in the Subb shop parking lot to patrol this problem. There is going to be a serious accident soon if nothing is done concerning this...

What can the police do though? It is currently not against the law to ride up that right lane and wedge your vehicle into the left lane at the last possible second.

The DPU first needs to designate the right lane as a right turn only lane and then, the police can start enforcement.

DOT engineers obviously tried to make the best of the space they had, when this section was rebuilt, the problem is drivers, you need signage that states every other car, if people just stopped being selfish and let a car ahead of them go, every other car works fine and traffic would flow, to see this work, drive any outgoing approach to the Holland Tunnel in Manhattan, its how they deal with significant more traffic volume than this one on Hoosick Street

I used to live on Wayne Street, right off of S. Lake; it was impossible to be able to cross the road to get to the convenience store. Hoosick Street is a mess. FIX IT. GET RID OF THE MERGE. IT'S NONSENSE.

and the same people knowing the route do it constantlly, once again your typical driver maybe some stupit tickets should be issued, wow wouldn't that help the budget.................

With the number of tractor-trailers that drive up Hoosick Street every day, moving to a single travel lane along the entire stretch would only make traffic worse heading east and uphill. With only one travel lane, traffic would be stuck behind every truck that goes up Hoosick Street, with no legal way to pass.

Also, considering traffic entering Hoosick Street from the Collar City Bridge is already traveling in two lanes, where would you propose reducing it down to one travel lane? You'd be creating a bottleneck regardless.

The short term solution is to put an "Alternate" sign at the point of merge. There are two lanes to that point and they should both be used, thus creating somewhat equal lengths of traffic in each lane, and removing the ability to cut ahead. Granted, 10%-15% of drivers would ignore the sign to gain that one car length but it is indeed the best solution given the situation.

Couldn't agree more. Extremely dangerous! Near accidents daily because people want to use the right hand turn lane to race up, cut people off, and nearly side swipe cars (sometimes they actually do). I have been side swiped here in a hit and run. The guy raced up, hit my car with his huge truck and took off. I've seen cops parked close by watching this happen. A cop was sitting there one day when someone raced up the lane, cut me off and almost hit me and did nothing. Absolutely ridiculous. I ride the line up the middle now...still doesn't stop some people. So aggravating!!!

The merge is only dangerous because people with a " One Lane Town" mentality refuse to merge. Everywhere there a cars on earth - people merge! For some unknown reason a select group of people in Brunswick refuse to follow a tradition as old as driving itself. The thousands of out of town drivers that travel New York 7 through Brunswick each day are baffled by the ignorance and bad driving manners of those that refuse to allow merging and by their actions cause countless near accidents everyday. It's very simple, every other car - everywhere on earth - everyone does it.
Proper merging in that spot would speed the flow of traffic dramatically, help to eliminate back up all the way to 15th St. and make living, working and shopping in Brunswick so much easier. Every business person in Brunswick has to listen to customers all day say how "some idiot" almost ran in to them or tried to run them off the road by Walgreens. That idiot is the person who refused to allow merging!

Correction. "That idiot" is the person who knows that this is a merge and flies up the right hand turning ONLY lane (which is solely there for people turning into the gas stations according to the STATE POLICE) to try and get ahead of as many cars as possible and cut people off last minute. THOSE are the idiots that don't know how to drive, infuriate people (why do you think people aren't letting them in!!??) and causing car accidents or near misses. People know this lane ends but rather that slow down and get in the correct lane at the South Lake intersection they go as fast at they can until the lane ends and then try to cut people off. It's completely ridiculous, rude, and dangerous. I drive this road daily and it never, ever fails that there is at least one, sometimes many using this lane to pass people.

lane merges require consideration and kindness two things sorely missing these days everywhere so now they become agressive lanes for people to be rude and risk everyone else on the road. They should not be used anywhere.

I think since I created it and may be the only one who can, I'm going to close this issue. Not because it's resolved -- it's as bad as ever -- but because there haven't been any comments in a long time and it's pretty clear nothing is going to be done about it. It probably isn't prudent to complain about it too much, anyway -- somebody might get the bright idea of putting a rotary there instead.
