The image of this on Google maps is dated May 2011, and shows green spray paint on the cover - as though someone was going to work on it. Even then, it looks like an "accident waiting to happen", though not as bad as it appears now!

Thanks Carol, nice photo. I have talked to lot people in the last few weeks about this spot, A lot of people walk, jog, run, push baby buggies up and down Canon ave. This type of infrastructure failure is all to common and is the result of decades of reactive city government doing the bare minimum and hoping no one will complain. Public works is now finding out that hooking up with SCF they added several hundred pro-bono employee's to the staff and these people have high expectations.

Sam from the City of Oakland left a hand written note (No Last Name?). " Check our M/H (Man Hole) found no sewer problem odor is inside main sewer man hole. Our sewer line is clear." Ok on day like today it is very difficult to stand next to or down wind of the man hole cover up to 20 feet away. This is a new problem I have lived here 20 years no odor. Since public works needs things itemized I will a file sidewalk is collapsing request order. Sam still did not address the odor problem that is out side the manhole cover. BTW the sewer is 15 feet below the manhole cover and should have enough flow not to smell. Something is rotten on Canon Ave.
