Someone had made this an issue recently but it has disappeared.

I think it warrants being republished because of what a mess the troy record website has become.

I tried counting how many advertisements are jammed on the main page but there are so many that I gave up! They have every kind of ad imaginable... pop ups, pop unders, pop over, animations, clickables, and more!

After I leave the troy record website I have to close the pop up ads that have opened themselves in a new browser behind the main page. Today it is a netflix and a life insurance. It's enough to make me want to scream.

It is obvious that the troy records NEWS website isn't about NEWS... it is about making money on advertising. They should really rethink what the website should be about. Is it about making a few bucks off the annoying advertisements or is it about being a useful place for local people to get their news?

Look at the TU's website. They know their role.

I too agree. The ads are out of control. This Could be the best local news webiste if it wasn't for all the ad clutter and freezing.

In addition the Don't miss the latest page that opens every time you click on a story frequently makes my computer freeze. It is a mess!

I'm sorry, but just how do you think the 'news' gets paid for???
There are certainly a lot of pop-ups, etc., but the Troy Record is a corporation seeking to make enough profit to survive another year.
Get realistic... this website is NOT free. YOU just aren't being asked to pay for it by subscription. Advertisements pay the bills. Yes they are annoying, but the alternative in the long run is no paper.
Does anyone actually think anymore?

You're missing the point, Edward, which appears to be because you aren't thinking. Of course we understand that ads are necessary. It's the annoying manner in which they are presented that is not necessary. And it's counterproductive; most people tune out annoyances.

I have to agree that it is annoying but they do have to make money to produce the paper. With more and more people reading their news online instead of buying the paper, it is a necessary annoyance. BUT I would like to be able to finish an article without the other box of news popping up blocking you from doing so, until it slowly fully loads and then you can dispense with it. But PLEASE without sometype of ads, the paper would go under, online too..

This is the most useless "newspaper" in the entire area. Even the weekly community papers and "Penny Savers" have more real news than this rag. It is not fit to line my bird-cage!

I might ask -- "why are you reading it?" You read it far enough to reach this 'discussion'. Apparently you find some value in it since you made it past the home page and decided to click through further.

Pop-up Ads are so 2002. They don't work. I would never click on one for fear of a virus. It is anti-advertising.
Get with the program "RECORD"... Every other online edition of news papers have figured out how to advertise without being obnoxious. I’m all Troy through and through. I even buy the print edition at least 3 times per week. But if I’m at work or out of town I rely on timesunion.com for my Troy news because of these archaic advertising tactics.

I hear ya! I e-mailed the editor and it has been three weeks and not a single response. I was not expecting them to change it for "me" but a response saying we got your complaint would have been courteous. As I type this three pop-ups have come up and there are two more new open behind this window.. And whats with that annoying tool bar at the bottom???

Yeah, I highly doubt that this is a source of enough revenue to (literally) CHASE your readers away from your web site.

I always feel like I've made a mistake when all those popups start appearing.

It really is absolutely ridiculous. The "articles" are like 2 sentences but you have to wait about 10 minutes for all the 7,897,142,567 ads to load from 13,876 different ad servers. What a horrifying mess.

The TU is actually getting worse now with their ads. Most recently they have the pop ups that you have to manually cancel to read an article. Are the TU and the record so BROKE that they really need to resort to these cheesy ads?! Come on you fools... get with it! Your readers do not want to fight through 10 ads just to read your website. It's not that important.
