Please give bicyclists some slack (also, please do not take this response as aggression, I am merely giving you my personal honest opinion to help give more perspective on this issue). Also, please be respectful and do not over-generalize the entire cycling community. Many cyclists feel very vulnerable while sharing narrow New Canaan roads with cars and large SUV's which typically travel above the posted speed limits. Vehicle drivers can catch up to slower cyclists when they witness something they think is unsafe and admonish them, cyclists can not similarly admonish motorists so I can understand why cyclists may react defensively. Once when I was riding my bike in New Canaan a group of teens drove by in an older white Ford Explorer and as they passed me they honked their horn and the passenger opened his door as if to hit me (to scare me). Needless to say I was extremely shaken I wanted to record their license but I had not pen and paper, I wanted to catch them and yell but I was powerless. You never know what type of encounters cyclists have had with motorists in the past that may be influencing their responses...Since you can kill us we ask that motorists are more careful around cyclists. When the motorists ask that cyclists are more careful around them it seems that motorists don't have any frame of reference of what it's like to ride a bicycle on New Canaan roads. I do believe that it is safest for cyclists to stop at posted stop signs, but then again people are not riding their bikes in NC because it is the safest option....
