And on a different note, I hope you also teach your children to walk their bikes across cross walks, because in the event that they are hit by a careless driver, they are at fault, since a bicycle becomes a vehicle on the road, you're either a vehicle or a pedestrian...this just coming from talking to someone who was hit, and their bike was an expensive one.
Cross walks seem to be a waste of time in a town where no one knows how to drive.

You are absolutely right. Shame on those who ignore crosswalks. There are COUNTLESS times I am at a crosswalk with my infant in a stroller and my preschooler and people blast through anyway.

Well maybe I will be following you then and making sure that you and your girls are wearing helmets, using appropriate arm signals, yielding to walkers, not biking on sidewalks or private property and that these said bicycles are in 100% mechanical working order!

make shur u snap a photo too or i will take it to court as you will need hard proof cuz i can easily say u were jay walking or littering...see not hard to accuse ppl and not have proof they did it...wont hold up in court if u dont have proof besides a plate number...u could have just taken a random plate number from a car and said he did this n did that.

Also i was under the impression that if the cross walk is uncontrolled its the responsibility of the pedestrian to proceed when safe...meaning when there r no cars not just walk cuz there is a cross walk and hope ppl stop for u...

Hate it when im driving down 2nd or sum thing and all of a sudden the car infront of me to let ppl across when there not suppose to cuz its a hazard to traffic behind them...almost rear ended a car cuz he decided to stop in the middle of 2nd ave to let a person walk across the streed(j walk)

also pls note i dont knwo if the said intersection is uncontrolled or not meaning lights. I dont live on the rich side of town

so your telling me if the light is green and there r ppl standing at the cross walk i have to stop and let them by!? I dont think so tim! That also goes for if the intersection is not controlled.

P.S im looking at the drivers ed book right now and i cant find anywhere in here where it says pedestrians have the right of way when it comes to a uncontrolled cross walk

It may have changed, but the Saskatchewan Driver's Handbook (SGI) 2007, states on p. 51: "Pedestrians - When approaching an intersection, you must yield the right of way to any pedestrians who are crossing the street [ . . . ] you must stop your vehicle before the crosswalk, which will either be painted on the road or be an imaginary extension of the sidewalk."

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
Pedestrian safety is for all ages. Unfortunately, in traffic incidents involving pedestrians and motorists, it is the pedestrian who suffers, often with tragic results. In many cases it is not the driver's fault. It is the responsibility of both driver and pedestrian to ensure each others safety by following some simple rules.

As a pedestrian:

Cross at marked crosswalks or traffic lights, not in the middle of the block or between parked cars;

Make sure drivers see you before you cross;

Cross when traffic has come to a complete stop;

At a traffic light, cross at the beginning of a green light. Do not cross once the “Don't Walk” signal begins to flash or once the light has turned to yellow. Never cross on a red light;

Watch for traffic turning at intersections or entering and leaving driveways;

Wear bright or light-coloured clothing or reflective strips, when walking in dusk or darkness.

As a motorist:

Be patient, especially with older pedestrians who need more time to cross the road;

Always look for pedestrians, especially when turning;

Remember, stay alert and slow down on residential streets and through school zones.

Breaking the law can be costly. Fines for offences at pedestrian crossings, school crossings, and at crosswalks where there are traffic signals are $150 and 3 demerit points. All fines are double ($300) in Community Safety Zones near schools and public areas.

As a parent or caregiver:

Teach and reinforce the proper techniques for crossing the road safely with your child.

Stress the importance of walking on the inside of the sidewalk, or where there are no sidewalks, as far away as possible from the travelled portion of the road;

Stopping before the edge of the sidewalk at all times;

Being alert and stopping at driveways and where there are no curbs.

And the fine is at a controlled, and/or designated cross walk

You know honestly, I do wear a helmet and both girls do. Just telling you that these are our children in Prince Albert and it is your pocket book. So stop in the crosswalks or pay the fine.

The only thing I know, and have always known, is that I stop for someone who is in a painted crosswalk. Or if there is a sign that displays Pedestrian Crossing. It's only common sense, was part of our driver's liscense written test. If it's painted on the street, its OBVIOUS, keep your eyes PEELED drivers! If someone is crossing a street where it is NOT marked, I slow down a bit, but don't stop. They can WAIT for me, until it is safe to cross. Just my two bits.

GWing Failing to stop for a pedestrian at a crosswalk is against the law in Saskatchewan and every other jurisdiction in Canada. Now start respecting others and follow the rules of the road.
BTW if you rear end a guy, weather he is stopping for a pedestrian or anything else, you are at fault. People like you need to learn the rules of the road and read the drivers handbook befor you hurt someone.

Allot of good comments, but one thisng that sticks out to me is there are going to be some fines handed out to people if the police see you not yeilding fir pedetrians. Just a thought though, if the lines are painted on the road; yeild to pedatrians, if the side walk ends and there are pedetrians; yeild, we as a family do follow bike safety; so follow us around you might learn something, and walking bikes, make us pedetrains. And for GWing, which side of town is the rich part and where is the poor part of town????

Did everyone see that a 4 year old girl was hit in a crosswalk near Gateway Mall. I was serious EVERYONE must STOP at a crosswalk at least for the children.... Let's hope that this never happens again.

this issue has been a pet peeve of mine,

more so when idiots go around the right side of a vehicle stopped.... they have no idea why but don't care
