The Calumet St. Bridge is one way coming up from Ridge. People constantly ignore the DO NOT ENTER signs and cross the bridge illegally. Sometimes they make a mad dash down Calumet like driving fast makes it OK. Sometimes they turn down Skidoo St. unaware or indifferent to pedestrians ready to step off the bridge. Half the time those ignorant people are on the phone and not paying any attention. The police haven't ticketed anyone that I have seen in months. Are they going to wait until someone is hit? The close calls happen on a regular basis and are very scary. Since the police don't enforce the DO NOT ENTER signs, maybe the walls can be cut down to make pedestrians visible.

Yes yes yes! I've been meaning to post this very issue for a while! Actually, you have two different issues here. First, is the drivers ignoring the do not enter. Someone told me once that years ago the do not enter was on the other side of the bridge and going down Skidoo was allowed. But that is no excuse for ignoring it now. The hill makes it so that you can't see if there is another vehicle on the bridge until you are over it. I've almost had several head on collisions there and the other driver always acts like I am in the wrong! The second issue is the height of the bridge walls making it impossible to see pedestrians. I live on Cresson and take that turn cautiously, but even still it is completely impossible to tell if there is a person there. This is especially difficult because people seem to LOVE walking in the middle of the street up Cresson rather than on the sidewalk.

I agree. I've gotten into several verbal arguments yelling at those who go the wrong way. I'm sure it will take an accident to get this taken care of.

Sam, apparently the bridge was 2 ways back in the 50's as was Calumet. I have lived here for 38 years and never saw the goofy position for the DO NOT ENTER sign that you described. People just love to make excuses for their bad behavior. I wonder what they tell their kids once they learn to read? I wonder what makes people feel such a sense of entitlement to be suck a jerk? My gas mileage would go up by at least 5 mpg if I ignored the signs all the time.
NGL, I'm glad I'm not the only one to yell at those jerks :) I've blocked the bridge with my car and told the other person that I'll wait until a cop arrives. Please keep up the pressure on those fools!

Well, its been 30 days since my original post and guess what, nothing has been done. Surprise, surprise! My next thought is to get warning signs posted on the east side of the bridge warning people that it is dangerous for pedestrians to cross on that side since they are not visible to the people going over the bridge the wrong way. Think that will work?

This afternoon I saw a guy drive across the bridge the wrong way and then park next to a hydrant. His tag number is FXD9858. I watched where he went and took a picture of his car. The guy came out one of the nuisance college houses and asked why I was taking a picture of his car. I wanted to see if a picture work with the police, it didn't. A police car conveniently came the hill just when I needed him. He wouldn't give the guy a ticket because: he didn't have a ticket book because there are none available in any where in the city AND he didn't see the guy drive and park there. I guess this means that nothing will be done until someone has more than a close call.

A+ for effort but that cop was completely lying. I've called to get cars ticketed for blocking the exit to our parking lot. You can't have them towed without getting a ticket first. I know a couple cops in other districts. I'm going to see if I can find a connection in ours. Have you tried reporting the issue to the local state rep (office is over on Midvale)?

Sam, thanks for the idea! I sent an email to Curtis Jones, who doesn't do anything, to Josh Cohen, who does respond, to captain Craighead and to Julie Camburn, the editor of the Fallser. I wrote in the subject box "Unacceptable response to an ongoing problem". I sent a message to JP Miranda but like all state and national politicians, it was through their own process. I really have had it with this nonsense!

150 days and I haven't seen anyone getting stopped for going over the bridge the wrong way. My gas mileage would be way better if I ignored the DO NOT ENTER signs like the lazy behind people who go the wrong way on a one way bridge.

180 days, interesting watching from the roof as cars go over the bridge the wrong way. Shouldn't be warning signs for pedestrians since the cars don't pay attention to the DO NOT ENTER signs?

The Calumet St. bridge is one of the 5 worst in Philly. If the police won't enforce the Do Not Enter signs, the bridge needs to be redesigned so pedestrians are at least visible to the dill holes who go over the bridge the wrong way. I hope it doesn't come down to an injury before something is done.

I will continue to keep this issue open until it is resolved. There are fewer close calls since the closing of St. Bridget school but the illegal crossing continues. We have been incredibly lucky to not have had anyone killed by the cars who whip around the corner but I don't want to see that happen.

Self-entitled people continue to ignore the DO NOT ENTER signs but I recently had a good interaction with one of those people. I often yell out DO NOT ENTER if I am on the porch and a car has its windows open. Most of the time people ignore me, just like the signs, but the other day I got a lot of trash talk from one of them. He actually came around the block and apologized for his behavior! He also acknowledged that he should have followed the sign. We shook hands and he probably won't do that again.

I had a near miss when I was crossing the street with my dog about a month ago. A vehicle ignoring the sign and illegally crossing the bridge had to lay on the brakes. I yelled at the driver (woman, 40's, child in the car, late model blue honda crv) and she gave me the finger. I fault myself as well for being naive and assuming people obey the law. Now I always assume that a car is going to cross illegally and look both ways. It's very dangerous because the walls of the bridge make a blind spot for crossing pedestrians.

I'm glad you and your pup are OK! You got the typical reaction from the driver, FU. I guess those people don't realize that they are teaching their kids to ignore signs and then take it out on the hapless pedestrian. I think there should be warning signs for pedestrians but that would force the Streets Dept. to recognize the problem and heaven forbid that should happen. I don't even use the sidewalk, I walk on the bridge because even the most ignorant driver can see me!

For whatever reason, the traffic going the wrong way over the bridge has decreased slightly, yay! The same self entitled jerks, two in particular who live at St. Bridget Lofts, still do it. The only way to stop the behavior is to hit them in the pocketbook with tickets.

I should do a survey one day about how many people who ignore the DO NOT ENTER signs are also on their phones. There has recently been a red pickup going over the bridge the wrong way who apparently has a hard time making the turn because there is a lot of squealing of tires as he backs up to get a better aim for Skidoo St. I haven't been in a position to see if the self entitled jerk is also on the phone.

I watched a woman drive down Calumet and pull into her driveway about 10 doors down. Not only does this person have a driveway and doesn't have to search for parking, she feels so self entitled that she doesn't even have to drive up the hill to get to her home.

So where does the sense of self entitlement come from? I apparently wasn't in that line when it was given out. None of the young people who happily go over the bridge the wrong way were even alive when the bridge was two ways, back in the late 40s. Who is telling them that the "shortcut" of dashing over the bridge, usually without looking for pedestrians coming off the steps and quite often with a cell phone in their hand, is acceptable?

I was sitting on the cool porch reading last week when someone came over the bridge the wrong way. I didn't say anything or make any gestures, just gave them some stink eye. The spineless wonder of a passenger hollered out "You old hag" as soon as they were away from the porch. People have no clue what it is like to see someone aiming straight at my porch with their 2 ton or more vehicle :( Some people don't turn their wheels until they are just a foot from the curb. Others are so busy with their phones, I never know if they will turn on time.

After the trash truck hit our tree and fence, I spoke with the Deputy Commissioner of Streets, Sanitation and the regional manager for Sanitation. Two weeks later, another trash truck went over the bridge the wrong way. The regional manager came out the next day to familiarize herself with the location and said that she tells the drivers to pay attention to signs. I'll see when it happens again.

Another close call the other day. If the pedestrian had been 1 foot closer to the end of the steps he would have been creamed by the self entitled fool who was speeding over the bridge the wrong way and making a left turn.

Funny how I just wrote about the jerk in the red car. He just went over the bridge the wrong way AGAIN and stopped to talk to me. He knew my name but I didn't know who he was until I asked his name. Turns out I taught him in high school, chemistry not reading. Bummer that he got that far without being able to comprehend something as simple as DO NOT ENTER.

It has been a real circus on Calumet, Stanton and the bridge due to the construction on Ridge. I hope it settles down when the construction is finished.

The ongoing construction on Ridge seems to be emboldening people going over the bridge the wrong way because they are speeding down Calumet and not appearing to watch for pedestrians when turning on Skidoo. The behavior continues on the weekend when there is no construction happening.

Road work at the bottom of the street has increased the wrong way traffic across the bridge. I fear that the people who used that route during the construction will continue the short term habit after the road work is finished.

Well the road work on Ridge Ave is finishing except for the resurfacing and the wrong way traffic over the bridge at the has slowed down slightly. There is still a regular parade of self-important clowns ignoring the DO NOT ENTER signs most of whom don't even drive with caution.

So many oblivious people so the DO NOT ENTER signs have no effect. I wish I was able to ignore their ignorance like those people ignore the signs.

Posting here seems pointless because the behavior doesn't change. Our house is the only one to be negatively impacted by people who can't read and/or comprehend DO NOT ENTER.

I am happy to report that NO ONE went over the bridge the wrong way while I was enjoying my coffee on the porch and then pulling weeds in the front garden. What a pleasant surprise!
