  • Waverley Ave watertown, MA - Watertown
While i agree that speed bumps in general are a great idea, the raised crossings on Waverley Ave heading towards Main st (coming from Belmont) are downright dangerous. First off, the raised sidewalks are painted a dark red color. not only are they identical to non-raised crossings in appearance, they are a dark color that is hard to see at night. I am aware of the white chevrons painted ahead of the raised crosswalks, but i think that painting them bright yellow, like other speed bumps, will make them easier to see, especially at night. The third raised sidewalk in the series is extremely taller than the first two. The first two raised crosswalks can comfortably be driven over at 5-10 mph. I assumed that the third raised crosswalk would be the same as the first two. I slowed accordingly, but even at 5 mph (I've retested it and i'm literally going 5mph), my car jumped harshly over this last bump. it bounced and bottomed out so severely that I lost contact with both the brake and gas pedal, my head bounced around and i lost visual of the road, the steering wheel lost control, and the bottom of my car ground itself on the pavement. I now have to come to a complete stop and gently roll over the hump while applying the break. This is a serious design issue that is going to cause an accident sooner or later, and I'm sure I'm not the only person that has had a problem with the unexpected difference in height of the raised crosswalks. Something needs to be done before someone gets hurt or wrecks their car.
