Description
Huge pothole seems to be growing. To date, it has swallowed several innocent traffic cones, several cubic yards of sand and gravel and, quite possibly a small child or two. Evidently the city patched or repaired a water main or some such in this area, then, for reasons unknown, the asphalt covering of the repair vanished (probably consumed by the sinkhole), then dirt and gravel was poured in, and three or four traffic cones placed. These all vanished over time, and the enormous man-eating divot in the street is all that remains...and grandually expands. (Now about eight inches deep and two feet wide...)

The pit is now nearly twice as large and at least eight inches deep. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen!
This pothole now has a brother forming at the end of Shirley Avenue, around a manhole cover, just about 50 feet up from the Revere Beach T Stop.

It may be a duplicate issue, but it was never fixed. We are requesting that it be fixed properly so we don't have to keep lodging complaints about it. As mentioned previously, we are aware that the City made a temporary attempt by dumping dirt and gravel into this enormous pit, since it was too cold and wet to pave it over, but, seriously, at least it might have saved a lot of grief to put a couple of steel plates over it or something so that the gravel dumped in there wouldn't be dislodged by passing vehicles, storms, etc.
This needs to be addressed--properly--before someone gets killed hitting this crater at speed. I had a close call this weekend, managing to just miss it....
I am writing to request that at least one of the following be done:
A. Properly patched with concrete and asphalt, not just dumps of gravel and mud, or
B. Covered with steel plates (possibly over a filling of gravel to give the plates support)
C. The road be closed before someone gets hurt
D. Appropriate and NOTICABLE signage be posted warning oncoming traffic of the hazardous conditions of the road until it can be properly repaired
Thank you!

The hole is now getting larger and deeper. Basically, one half of the road has now fallen into the pit.
At this point, with the increased travel associated with summer, I figure a lawsuit against the City for failure to maintain safe public thoroughfares is only a matter of time if this isn't addressed soon.

elected officials and nothing has been addressed just yet.
Cars are being damaged by these especially when the potholes
fill with rain.

This and the cracking, disintegrating sidewalks with manhole covers and access covers protruding inches above the pavement. In one case, I tripped over tilted sidewalk slabs, nearly breaking an ankle. In another, my snow-blower caught up on one of these stupid manhole cover/valve-covers, but all that ever happened was some guy came and pounded it down again--within a few months, it was, once again, more than an inch above surrounding pavement. And, a third case involved my snow-blower ingesting and then flinging a chunk of sidewalk some forty or fifty feet. I was thankful that it happened to be thrown toward my house rather than toward the other people who were shoveling nearby.
I know the City's highway department is seriously underfunded and understaffed, and I am sure they are doing the best they can....I have to wonder what it is that the City is spending all our jacked-up taxes and excessive water-bills on--it certainly doesn't seem to be the City's infrastructure--or the few overworked gentlemen who try so hard to keep up with the impossible workload....
I have to say, I have honestly considered renting a small backhoe, cement mixer, and repairing these stupid holes myself. It is only my fear of getting arrested for tampering with city property that scares me off...
