Description
There is frequent pedestrian traffic along the stretch of Lake Wheeler Rd from Maywood Ave to S Saunders St. You can't walk along the Dix park side of the road at all (despite your direction) due to weeds and it's too narrow. The other side of the road is mostly ditches, holes and resident's yards. Pedestrians must walk single-file and literally jump hurdles at risk of their lives from the speeding traffic. (The speed limit is 35 but everyone goes 45.) Thinking of walking your dog from downtown to the farmer's market? Forget it - one of you could get killed (I've had several near-death experiences attempting this.) Please consider this area for at least one sidewalk!

1) Sidewalk construction from Centennial Parkway to Maywood Avenue is already planned. Information about that project can be found here:
http://www.raleighnc.gov/home/content/PWksDesignConst/Articles/SidewalkProjects.html
2) The City will be moving forward with the Southern Gateway Study, and this area is included in the boundary for that effort. More on that planning process can be found here:
http://www.raleighnc.gov/business/content/PlanUrbanDesign/Articles/SouthernGateway.html
3) The City is in the middle of negotiating an acquisition of Dix Park, which abuts this section of Lake Wheeler. Resolving the transportation needs along this street relative to the future of the Dix Campus is a significant need for this area that cannot be determined until our negotiations are complete.
We would strongly suggest that you become involved with the Southern Gateway study, as that will be the best way to get engaged with the need for and timing of improvements in this area. For more information contact Jennifer Baldwin (jennifer.baldwin@raleighnc.gov)
