This is a Statewide service that not only applies to Middletown. It originates out of New Haven. As a reminder, The Middletown Press services the towns of Middletown, Middlefield, Cromwell and Durham. 'See, Click, Fix' is not a part of our small time 'Town Times'.

This is an extremely dangerous intersection. When you're turning into Royal Oak Drive, you can barely see the boundaries of the street, while cars wizz by you on the right.

As a side note regarding Mr. Dibiase's comment below, we read the Middletown Press in Durham too! Didn't know that you had an exclusive on the Press. Why not spend your time doing something constructive besides complaining about a posting from a citizen (sg) who cares about the safety of others.

PS - By the way, the Royal Oak Park subdivision (99 houses) is in both Middletown and Durham!

This issue was never addressed and no things are even more tracherous with all the extra snow, snow banks, narrow street and inclement weather. A light needs to be installed as soon as the weather improves!

Still no action on this ticket. Why does this report go to United Illuminating and not Northeast Utilities? It should go to NU!

One June 16, 2009 First Selectman, Laura Francis recieved the following response to her request for an illumication study on Route 17 at Royal Oak for the State of Ct, Department of Transportation.

Regarding the intersection of Route 17 and Royal Oak Drive, the geometric, operational and environmental factors, and accident history were considered in the review for this location. The latest available accident experience for Route 17 at the intersection, covering the three-year period rom July 1, 2005 - June 30, 2008, indicated that one nighttime collision had occured out of a total of three accidents. The numebr of nighttime accidents experienced was not significantly higher than State wide averages occurring on similar types of roadways in the State. It is not the Department's practice to participate in illumination installations that are not warranted when the existing conditions are compared to nationally recognized guidelines for highway lighting. Based upon the criteria for illumination, lighting for this area is not considered necessary. However, the town may have illumination installed at its own expense.

At this the Board of Selectmen have not voted on this item.

I find the response from the town of Durham as inconclusive. There are over one hundred houses in this development with countless vehicles that enter and exit each day. A light would improve the safety of this area. This year was especially challenging with the high snow banks and visibility was a problem, especially at night. When I look at the placement of all the street lights in the area and beyond (going down through the entire town), there is one street light for every street intersection. I don't understand how our street was overlooked, especially with the population that resides in our neighborhood. It simply does not make sense. All I can say, is one accident is too many period! This is a dangerous situation waiting to happen. Route 17 has become a race track. The traffic situation has greatly increased since we moved here almost 26 years ago. This is another reason why a street light should be installed. I find the attitude of the town very cavalier in its approach to safely. At this point, perhaps a petition is in order, followed by a formal letter to Northeast Utilities and The State Department of Transportation.

In addition to my comment below, I would like to know what the history of accidents in this VICINITY (both entrances of Royal Oak) was from 2008 to the present.

Ticket still open. Roadway is very dark in this area. Difficult to see turning into street at night. A new study should be done since the last one was performed two years ago.

This street needs a light. Someone who was coming to my home at night, missed the street because it was so dark that they didn't see it. They had to turn around and try again. Now that the nice weather is here and now that CL&P is in the area replacing lights on Main Street, why not address this situation.

Ticket still open. Town painted bright white along curbing and added a white stop line. While this is an improvement, a street light is still needed at this busy intersection! A long DARK winter is coming....

Something to think about....when there is snow on the ground, those white markings will not be seen. This is still a hazard that needs to be addressed and I don't understand why it is being ignored.

this is a very bad intersection off a busy road. They are not asking for a stop sign or stop light, just some illumination so no one gets hurt. Please get this done.

Our entire town was recently in the dark with the recent power outages from the October winter storm. Now everyone knows just how hard it is to try and turn into a dark street. We have a large neighborhood with many people coming and going. In addition, Route 17 is like a race track these days with people not obeying the speed limit. Can't we just get some illumination to make this dangerous intersection safer! It's ridiculous how long this ticket has been open with NO serious response!

A light can be installed on one of two telephone poles which are located across the street from this very dangerous intersection. Let's get this done now before a major accident occurs.

This issue is still open and still needs a resolution. Why is it so hard to get a light installed at a dangerous intersection?

Every road that intersects down Route 17, except Royal Oak Drive, has a light at its intersection. A light needs to be installed at this intersection before there is a very bad accident! Can't understand what is so complicated about this. Guess the athletic complex at Coginchaug is more important than peoples' safety.

Can this issue PLEASE be resolved once and for all. There is a pole opposite the street where a light can easily be installed. Why the obstinance for such an important safety hazard. I don't understand the apathy at all! The area is STILL DARK and STILL DANGEROUS.

It's been almost two years since this ticket was open and STILL no action has been taken, other than to paint the curb at the end of the street white. Please install a light here. Hundreds of people go in and out of this neighborhood every day and night and it is needed.

Maybe I should lay down at the intersection and get run over by a car! What does it take before something like this is addressed, someone to die!!! Let's stop passing the buck about who is responsible for it and get it installed!!

There has still been no action on this ticket. Someone who came to visit us the other night said they were almost rear ended when they tried to turn onto our Street (Royal Oak). It's narrow, it's dark, the cars speed in both directions, at least a light would help the situation. Will it really take a bad accident before a light will be installed?! Honestly all we want is a street light not a traffic light. PLEASE TAKE ACTION ON THIS. Get the State involved if you have to!

Cannot believe this ticket is still open three years later. It serves as a log which can be used in the future in court to prove the lack of action by the town and the State. Why does every intersection along route 17/Main St have a street light except ours? Perhaps if the first selectman lived in this neighborhood, we would get our light!

No the street light has still not been replaced at the junction of Royal Oak Drive and Route 17 in Durham, Connecticut. Can't believe it's been almost 3 years! I have little or no faith that this will be resolved! It needs some high profile attention.

It has been 1,115 days since this ticket was initiated. The situation is STILL unresolved, there is still no street light at the end of our Street. No action has been taken by the town and the dark days of winter are approaching. I am both disgusted and worried. There is a telephone pole at the end of the street and a light could easily be added. I just do not understand the apathy but I will come election time.....

Do we need to have a deadly accident at this intersection to have a street light installed. At just about EVERY STREET intersection in Durham a street light can be found. Don't we the residents of the Royal Oak neighborhood matter?????

This ticket is still unresolved and we are now going into the FOURTH year! What will it take to get a light installed before a bad accident occurs. Would the leaders of this town think differently if they had a loved one living in our subdivision. I have a very hard time turning into this street at night, especially with the darkness and snow of winter. Someone please take action and resolve this once and for all. We are asking to improve the safety of the all those who live in this neighborhood and for those who visit us, and that includes school buses!!

This issue has not been resolved and a street light is needed more than ever. I would love to know who closed this ticket since I am the originator and I DID NOT close the ticket. I will continue to pursue this issue until a new street light {not traffic light} is installed!

Over a year later and there has still not been any action on getting a street light at this location. I am hoping with all the work being done to improve roadways and make things safer that this will become a reality SOON!!

Please get this done this year. The history of this LONG standing ticket says it all. All we want is a street light at the end of our street for safety. If this were not a necessary safety placement, then why does every street in town have one at its entrance?! The.curb at the end of our street was painted white FIVE years ago, that is NOT an acceptable solution. Can we please appeal to you to get a light at the end of our street for safety purposes, we are being very reasonable. PLEASE

It's 2017, seven years since this ticket was open. I am requesting The Transportation Department of the State of Connecticut reopen this ticket and reinvestigate this issue. I would also appreciate it if the Town of Durham would install a light at the end if this Street. If this were not a safety issue, then why does Every Street Fuentes the main thoroughfares have a light at their entrance? Someone needs to respond and resolve this matter once and for all. It is a very reasonable request.

Thankfully this issue has FINALLY been addressed and we gave a street light at the intersection of Royal Oak Drive and Route 17! Thank you to whoever us responsible for getting this done. All of us in the neighborhood greatly appreciate this installation to improve safety in this area. THANK YOU!!!!!!
