This intersection is dangerous but does not need a light. This is one of the few locations where I support a traffic circle. It provides the least impact to the current traffic pattern and reduces the cross-traffic risk.
I don't agree with a light but maybe an island or something to direct the flow of traffic better. Cars moving up Sterigere to make a left onto Harding, don't always realize they should keep moving, there isn't a STOP sign for them.
Traffic light may be overkill, but it absolutely needs better signage, lines, and turn lanes since it is very unclear to drivers unfamiliar with the intersection who has the right of way and who has to stop. Don't know if there is room for a traffic circle due to the hill on Sterigere and the ball fields...but maybe three-way stop signs?
Here is my proposal for the traffic circle, it's a big project, but I think if we can get enough local support, one that funding can be found for. A simple traffic study will show the numbers of cars moving through here on a daily basis. Have you been here during rush hour?
I agree with Lu, but people don't read. Something needs to be done at this intersection before someone gets killed. Kids cross this stretch of road in the morning on their way to school. Let's fix this before we have to bury a middle school child.
Especially in the summer when all of the baseball fields are packed and family/friends are travelling to see them play. They don't know the area very well and because it is so confusing it is very dangerous. People trying to make a left on Sterigere coming off of 202 get impatient and speed ahead and make a U-turn by the fountain- Also dangerous. With that much traffic, a playground, a park AND a football stadium it only makes sense to make this area as safe as possible. They need a light or at least some painted lines!
Thank you Lu for a voice of reason. Pay attention to the signs and when it say "Right Turn Keep Moving", darn it, keep it moving!! The stop sign w/ a sign stating(oncoming traffic has right of way) on the side where the pal building is would be more appropriate, people seem to get a bit impatient waiting there while all the other traffic is going maybe NOT knowing that they have the right-of-way. Another thing, maybe Norristown could enforce more traffic citations/vehicle impounding of the people who drive unlicensed and illegal in this town might help significantly.
