Robert I enjoyed as well. Just because there’s an amazing market going on doesn’t mean safety regulations should be ignored. Plenty of resident and free (Sunday) meter parking was available but not used by the reckless drivers.
The drivers were not reckless, and many (perhaps most) of them are from the vendors at the Flea. What's more, parking is far from plentiful in this area - even on a Sunday when parking is free. As for the suggestion that this parking poses a safety hazard, that is very questionable. A better proposal would be to make this curbside space available to vendors and participants during public events held at this location.
There is plenty of room for cars on the sidewalks; not quite sure why people can’t park there since it’s just as legal?
If parking is truly an issue, it’s very simple to apply for a parking exception which could free up spots for those driving to the market.
Robert Winters seems to believe that anyone should be able to park anywhere so that ppl can have a good time. Even if it puts cyclists and pedestrians at risk. Good thinking, Robert! @Robert, Please consider moving elsewhere, though? Someplace without laws seems like a good fit for you.
For example, parishioners at St. Mary's on Inman Street have parked on the east side of Inman Street near Mass. Ave. in a No Parking zone on Sundays since time immemorial. Those of us who have lived in Cambridge a long time understand compromise. Most of us can also tell the difference between perceived risk and actual risk. There is no actual risk associated with either the Sydney Street parking or the Inman Street parking.
Thank you for reporting your concern to City of Cambridge via Commonwealth Connect. We will use this information as part of an ongoing review of data to better understand where and when to deploy our officers for this type of enforcement. In the future, if you see this type of activity, we encourage you to call the Cambridge Police non-emergency number at 617-349-3300 and an available, nearby officer will be dispatched to the location.
