Greg:
We appreciate your concern for Waldon Road, and we share your frustration. Unfortunately, as road funding continues to decline and the cost of maintaining roads continues to rise, more and more roads in Oakland County will deteriorate.
The Road Commission is funded through gas tax and vehicle registration fee revenues (not your property taxes), and those revenues have gone down 5 percent over the last 10 years. During that same time, ALL of the expenses related to maintaining roads have gone up dramatically.
As a result, we have had to reduce all of the services we provide, and can no longer afford to resurface any roads unless federal dollars are available to do so. We have reduced staff levels by 15 % and continue to reduce our head count.
Please let the state legisltors know that our roads are crumbling. They are the ones who control road funding in Michigan.
Thank you.
